Last night around 9 p.m., our Traffic Enforcement Unit stopped a motorist for stunt driving.

A 19-year-old male was travelling 164 km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone on the E.C. Row Expressway at Central Avenue.

The vehicle was impounded for 14 days and the driver’s licence was suspended for 30 days. Additional penalties may apply in court.

Stunt driving puts everyone at risk. Please slow down and obey posted speed limits.

Did You Know?
As of July 1, 2026, Ontario drivers will need to choose many accident benefits that are currently automatic in auto insurance policies.

That means:
More flexibility ✅
More responsibility ⚠️

However, saving a little today could cost a lot after an accident.

At Tabone Insurance Brokers, we believe insurance should protect your life — not just your budget.

Many drivers assume that if they have personal auto insurance, they're covered no matter how they use their vehicle. Unfortunately, that's not always the case.

Most personal auto insurance policies are designed for everyday activities such as commuting, shopping, visiting friends, and family travel. Once you begin using your vehicle to earn income, your insurance company may view that as a commercial activity, which can change your coverage requirements.

If you drive for services like Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, SkipTheDishes, Instacart, or similar platforms, there may be periods when your personal insurance no longer provides full coverage.

For example:

While using your vehicle for personal errands, your regular policy typically applies.
Once you log into a rideshare or delivery app and make yourself available for work, different insurance rules may apply.
If you are transporting passengers or making deliveries, special coverage may be required.
Many rideshare companies provide some insurance protection while drivers are actively working, but coverage limits, deductibles, and conditions can vary significantly. There may also be gaps between your personal policy and the company's coverage.

What Happens If You Don't Tell Your Insurance Company?

Failing to disclose that you use your vehicle for income-generating activities could create problems if you need to file a claim. In some cases, coverage may be limited or denied if the insurer determines the vehicle was being used in a way not disclosed on the policy.

Protect Yourself

If you use your personal vehicle for any type of work, contact your insurance broker or insurance company and ask:

Am I covered while using my vehicle for work?
Do I need a rideshare endorsement?
Do I need commercial auto coverage?
Are there any gaps in coverage I should be aware of?
A quick conversation today can help prevent expensive surprises later.

The Bottom Line

Using your vehicle to earn income can affect your insurance coverage. Whether you're driving passengers, delivering food, or making business-related trips, make sure you understand exactly what your policy covers before an accident happens.

Here is my take.

Everyone’s pumped about “saving money.” Sure — some people are seeing $49, maybe $89 off their renewal. Nice. That’s basically two takeout coffees. But let’s be honest: everything happening behind the scenes is pointing to premiums going up, not down. Here’s why, in plain English:

More lawsuits — People who used to get Accident Benefit coverage through another policy suddenly can’t. They’re going straight to lawyers. And lawyers don’t exactly offer loyalty points.

Insurers getting sued — Especially the directs. Someone buys the new minimums, has a loss, and then says “no one explained this to me.” Boom — lawsuit.

Brokers getting dragged in too — Same story. Same lawyers. Same bill. "Insurer pays first” = more small claims — And trust me, people will use it. Minor bump, stiff neck, and suddenly it’s “well, I pay for insurance, so I’m using it.” Thousands of tiny claims add up fast.

Come July 1, that mindset is going to blow up. Not because people are bad — because it’s human nature. If you’re paying for something, you’re going to use it. And every one of those little claims costs money to process. That’s where premiums climb. And that’s just the insurance side. The ripple effect is bigger: More people ending up on OW or ODSP because they don’t have income replacement. More pressure on healthcare — physio, massage, chiro, all of it. And yes… more lawyers. Everywhere.

So yeah, the future’s “bright,” but that glow ahead? It’s the warning light on the dashboard that everyone pretends isn’t flashing.
