An update by the Globe Mail suggests that due to inflation amongst other numbers, we are now more likely to see another rate hike this year. But to complicate things even more, the forecasted odds of any rate cuts next year have decreased in a big way. Finally, the odds of multiple interest rate increases next year have also increased, putting people and especially homeowners in a potentially very difficult and vulnerable position.

If you are currently in either a variable rate mortgage or have significant debt in the form of a HELOC, a home equity line of credit, it may be the right time to consolidate and lock in now with a fixed rate mortgage, at what is currently still a fairly reasonable interest rate.

Also, anyone due for a renewal in the next 18 months should seriously consider renewing early.

The BOC increase came in at the expected 25 basis points, one of the smallest increases we've seen in a while. The link I'm attaching goes into a lot more depth, but in a nutshell the BOC is expecting/wanting to hold further increases for a while, pending what happens with the cost of living.

For those looking to purchase a new home, this may be a good time to begin the process. For mortgage holders coming up for renewal, and/or looking to refinance and use their equity to pay off some debt and possibly lower their monthly expenses, once again this may be a good time to get started.
