"As I sat down with clients for a number of annual reviews this month, many conversations followed a similar theme. Portfolios have performed well, in many cases very well, and understandably the questions become:

“Can this continue?”
“What’s really happening in the U.S.?”
“Should we be looking elsewhere for opportunities or looking to shelter this growth into more defensive positions?”

While no one can predict markets with certainty, we continue to believe the best outcomes come from remaining disciplined, diversified, and focused on long-term goals.

Throughout July, investors were faced with no shortage of headlines. Technology companies reported quarterly earnings, markets continued to evaluate the impact of significant AI-related spending, trade and CUSMA negotiations remained front and center, and investors continued to debate the path of interest rates in both Canada and the United States. Sadly, ongoing conflicts around the world also remain in the news, reminding us that many of the events influencing markets have very real human impacts far beyond their economic consequences."

"Canadian investors have had plenty to smile about, with the TSX posting a standout year and showing how quickly sentiment can turn. Beyond the numbers, there has also been a noticeable lift in national pride, from Canada Day celebrations to a memorable summer of sport.

Canada’s women’s national soccer team has carried much of the country’s soccer spotlight for years, and this summer the men’s team delivered another milestone. Their World Cup run on home soil has given Canadians a reason to rally, with the team earning its first World Cup point, first World Cup win, and first trip beyond the group stage. Even if some of us are still explaining the offside rule at family barbecues, it has given everyone an easy reason to cheer—and with another match ahead on Saturday, the story is not finished yet."

"March reminded investors that markets do not move in
straight lines, particularly when global geopolitics re-enter
the foreground. Headlines surrounding Iran and the Middle
East dominated investor sentiment throughout the month, contributing to sharp swings between “risk on” and “risk off” days. While uncertainty remains elevated, it’s important to separate short-term market noise from longer-term fundamentals.

The most significant geopolitical development this month has been the escalation, and intermittent de escalation, of tensions involving Iran. At the centre of market concern is the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints. Roughly 20% of global oil supply flows through this narrow passage, making it uniquely important to global energy prices and inflation expectations."
