Hey, so today is the deadline for most of us to file a 2024 income tax return, no big deal….

What does that even MEAN? Because… I mean, it’s not like you’re not allowed to file them any other time of the year! Trust us, we know - we do taxes year-round here at Desy’s.

Honestly, in a lot of cases the “deadline” doesn’t really mean much of anything! It’s IMPORTANT if you owe more taxes than you’ve paid - if you file (and/or pay CRA) after the deadline you’re going to be subject to added interest on that.

Which… I mean, it sucks, but it’s not a life-or-death situation. You can breathe!

For folks who are getting a refund from the government? Meeting the deadline means there won’t be any delays getting anything coming back to you, for example CCB, Trillium benefits, GST for those who qualify, etc. etc.

Aaaand if you ARE late and your stuff is delayed… you’re gonna get a nice big backpay when they do process it.

So if you haven’t got your taxes done yet accept this teeny tiny slap on the wrist✋take a deep breath, STOP STRESSING, and get us your tax info ASAP.

AND DON’T FORGET for our self-employed pals, YOUR deadline isn’t here ‘til June 15th, so you (and your spouse - wahoo!) are still good for another month!

Those moments in life where you just… siiiiiigh…. Oh man, that work, that effort, that FOCUS was all worth it! WE DID IT!

Did you know that while we’re mired in tax season (like pigs in p**p, it’s awful to everyone else but we are LOVING IT!) we’re still an awesome team of bookkeepers, too?

WHY, even when we’re up-to-our-eyeballs busy, should you work with us?

Because doing your own books is hard. And frankly, we’re really really good at it.

Are you a small business owner? Or self-employed in any way?

What’s your business? Is it bookkeeping? Or maybe accounting?

NO? I mean, some of you yes - awesome! You maybe don’t need us, though there IS something to be said about an outside, unbiased set of eyes. In which case “I volunteer as tribute!”

But everyone else?? Guys, really? What are you best at? Hopefully that’s what you’re in business doing??

Maybe at the very beginning the “bookkeeping” part of the business was okay, you can keep atop of it. But really? How are you doing at being the absolute best at what you do AND staying abreast of: accounts receivable, tax documentation, payroll, budgeting, deduction allowances, ledgers, cashflow, accounting software, closing/balancing the books monthly, adjusting bookkeeping methodology as business grows and needs change… etc. etc. etc.

We’re IN the business and we’re overwhelmed typing all that out, sheesh!

Stop stretching yourself so thin. Focus on running your bakery, your therapy practice, your contracting company, your restaurant, your tattoo studio, your hair salon, your…fill in the blank with that thing you do best!! DO THAT and let us do ours.

Hands up, who has debt?!🙋‍♂️

It’s stressful, isn’t it? Mortgages, car loans, student loans, lines of credit, credit cards, the money you borrowed from your parents you’re hoping they never actually ask for you to pay back…

We all have it. Or HAVE had it. Or will have it.

The sad reality for most of us is that it’s a normal part of how our economy works, so… yeah, it’s a thing.

Well, while we’re busy as can be over here working on all your taxes we thought a couple tips on how you can work towards paying YOURS off might be more interesting than, you know, ANOTHER reminder to get us your tax documents 😉

There are a couple of EASY methods that you can work through on your own to eliminate your debts as fast as possible - you can find loads of details about either with Google, there are books on the topic, etc. etc. But the bare-basics gist…

List ALL your debts, all of them!

What are your minimum payments on each? X, Y, Z. PAY THOSE, religiously. Always. And then what extra can you afford into your debt payments? Pay that extra on top of the minimum payment on whichever you choose - debt snowball would have you pick the smallest debt, debt stacking would have you focus on the highest interest. Neither are “right” or “wrong.” Do what works best/feels right for YOU and your situation.

But pay it. Minimum payment(s) plus affordable extra. Until it’s gone.

Then. PAY THAT EXACT SAME AMOUNT, so the minimum plus extra, on the NEXT debt (either next smallest or next in interest). So THAT debt is getting its minimum payment, the first-paid-off’s minimum, and the extra.

Your monthly output is the exact same each time.

You just have increasingly less debt, less interest payments, less falling behind, less STRESS…

Until all the debt is gone.

It’s weirdly simple.
