The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) provides additional, tax-free monthly income to lower-income seniors receiving OAS.

Unlike CPP and OAS, GIS is income-tested annually and is not
issued automatically — eligible individuals must apply to receive it.

Many Canadians are unaware of their eligibility, resulting in missed benefits that could otherwise support their retirement income.

Understanding GIS is an important part of comprehensive retirement planning.

Old Age Security (OAS) differs from CPP in that eligibility is based on Canadian residency rather than
employment history. While most Canadians qualify around age 65, the amount received — and the
potential for income-based clawback — makes understanding this benefit essential to retirement
planning.
Delaying OAS beyond age 65 can also increase your monthly payment, offering an important
strategic consideration for those planning their retirement timeline.

Why is a Will important?

A Will is more than just a document for after you’re gone. It’s a way to make your wishes clear and help protect the people and assets that matter most to you.

1. You decide who gets your assets
With a Will, you can state how you want your property and possessions distributed. Without one, Ontario law determines who is entitled to your estate and how much they receive.

2. You choose who will manage your estate
You can name an estate trustee (executor) to carry out your instructions and manage the estate according to your wishes. Without a Will, someone generally has to apply to the court for authority to administer the estate.

3. You can make important plans for your children
A Will allows you to make plans for your children’s care and inheritance. In Ontario, you can name a person to have decision-making responsibility for your children after your death, subject to the law, and provide instructions for managing assets intended for them.

Bottom line: A Will helps turn your wishes into a clear plan—so your family isn't left guessing about what you wanted.

Gawin mo na ang Will at Power of Attorney.

I-message mo ako, tutulungan kitang simulan itong tatlong bagay this week. Wag na hintayin ang "bukas."

The Canada Pension Plan (CPP) is funded by contributions made throughout your working years —

it is not a government handout, but a benefit you have earned.

The amount you receive depends on your total earnings and the number of years you contributed, as well as the age at which you choose to begin receiving payments.

Choosing when to start CPP — as early as 60 or as late as 70 — can significantly affect your monthly income for the rest of your life.

Understanding this decision is essential to sound retirement planning.

Understanding your retirement income sources is one of the most important steps in financial planning.

Many Canadians assume "government pension" is a single benefit — in reality, it consists of three distinct programs: CPP, OAS, and GIS, each with its own eligibility rules and impact on your
retirement income.

Over the coming videos, we will examine each program individually, along with strategies to help you maximize your benefits.
