Small Business Week is a good reminder of just how much our local businesses bring to our communities.

From the places we shop and eat at to the services we rely on, local businesses help make Vermilion and Mannville the communities weโ€™re proud to call home.

That innocent-looking โ€œHey, are we still on for dinner tomorrow?โ€ text might not be as innocent as it seems.

Scammers sometimes send messages designed to get you to reply. A response can confirm that your phone number is active, potentially leading to more scam texts and calls.

Protect yourself from smishing:
โ€ข Donโ€™t reply to suspicious or unexpected texts
โ€ข Mark the message as spam or junk
โ€ข Block the sender
โ€ข Avoid sharing your phone number publicly when possible

When a message comes from an unknown number, itโ€™s better to ignore it than engage.

Stop. Think. Donโ€™t reply.

You receive an email about a large payment you donโ€™t remember making. It tells you to call customer support within 12 hours to dispute the charge.
Itโ€™s tempting to act quickly, but thatโ€™s exactly what the scammer wants.

This type of phishing scam uses a fake receipt and a sense of urgency to get you to call a number controlled by the scammer. From there, they may try to obtain your personal or financial information.

Hereโ€™s what to do:
โ€ข Donโ€™t call the number in the email
โ€ข Donโ€™t click its links
โ€ข Check your account directly through the official app or website

When something feels urgent, take a moment to verify it first.

Today marks an incredible milestone as we celebrate Connieโ€™s 30 years with Vermilion Credit Union!

Over the past three decades, Connie has worn many hats at VCU, from Member Service Officer and Investment Officer to her current role as Investment Finance Clerk. Through it all, she has remained a familiar and trusted face to our members and a steady, helpful presence on our team. Connie is always ready to pitch in, whether itโ€™s helping with a task, supporting a teammate, or leaving a few treats around the office to brighten everyoneโ€™s day.

Thirty years is something worth celebrating. Thank you, Connie, for three decades of dedication, kindness and all the little things you do to make VCU a better place.
