Why do wealthy families use trusts to preserve and pass on wealth?

Building wealth takes years. But what happens to it when you're no longer there to make the decisions?

A trust allows assets to be managed by a trustee for the benefit of others, according to established terms.

Why do families use trusts?

✅ Control inheritance: Decide when and how beneficiaries receive assets instead of giving everything at once.

✅ Protect children: Manage assets until beneficiaries reach a specified age.

✅ Support family members: Provide structured financial support for those who need ongoing assistance.

✅ Business succession: Help transfer business interests across generations.

✅ Blended families: Balance the needs of a surviving spouse and children from previous relationships.

✅ Asset protection: Certain trusts may offer protection from creditors or family disputes, depending on their structure and applicable laws.

Two common types of trusts:

• Testamentary trust: Generally established through a will and takes effect after death.

• Inter vivos trust: Created during someone's lifetime.

⚠️ The 21-year rule in Canada

Most ordinary family trusts face a deemed disposition of certain capital assets every 21 years.

Example:

Original investment: $500,000
Value after 21 years: $1.5 million

Even without selling, the trust could realize a taxable capital gain of $1 million.

This may create a tax bill without receiving cash from a sale. Exceptions and tax-deferral strategies may apply.

Where does life insurance fit?

Life insurance can provide funds after death to help cover estate obligations, support beneficiaries or facilitate business succession.

It doesn't automatically eliminate taxes or the trust's 21-year rule.

The bigger picture:

A will directs estate distribution. A trust provides structure for managing assets. Insurance may provide liquidity when needed.

The goal isn't just to leave wealth behind, but to leave a plan for how it's managed.

Fair doesn’t always mean equal.

One child may inherit the family business. Another may receive the cottage or investment property. But those assets can have very different values — and dividing everything equally may not even be practical.
Estate equalization is about planning ahead so each beneficiary can receive a fair share without forcing the sale of an important asset.
Life insurance can sometimes be used as part of that strategy by creating liquidity at death, helping balance inheritances while allowing certain assets to stay where the family intended.
The goal isn’t simply to divide assets. It’s to reduce conflict and make sure the plan actually works when the time comes.

One day you'll leave your business. Every owner does — by sale, by succession, by health, or by age.

The question is never whether. It's whether it happens on your terms or circumstance's.

The numbers say most owners don't get to choose: 76% will exit within a decade, and only 9% have a written plan (CFIB, 2023). The rest are hoping the ending works out.

Hope isn't a succession plan. But a real one doesn't have to be complicated — it starts with knowing where you stand.

I help owners get exit-ready, starting with a free 15-minute review. DM me "EXIT".

Running a business takes more than making sales.

Strong businesses are built on structure, knowing your cash flow, keeping reserves, managing debt, planning for taxes, protecting key risks, and thinking beyond the next month.

This checklist is a simple reminder to step back and ask:

**Is the foundation of your business actually strong?**

You don’t need to fix everything at once. Start with the weakest area and build from there.

**Strong Foundations. Stable Futures.**

An RESP can be one of the most effective ways to build education savings because your own contributions may be supplemented by government incentives.

For example, if you contribute $2,500 in a year, the basic Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) can add 20%, or up to $500 for that year. Over time, the basic CESG can provide up to $7,200 per child, subject to eligibility and contribution history.

Some children may also qualify for the Canada Learning Bond (CLB), which can provide up to $2,000 and does not require personal contributions to receive it.

Another useful feature is that unused CESG room can generally be carried forward, which may allow a family to catch up on grants in future years, subject to annual limits.

And the RESP does not just hold contributions and grants - the money can also be invested, giving it the opportunity to grow over time.

So the basic idea is:
Your contributions + government grants + potential investment growth = a larger education fund for your child.

RESP rules, grant eligibility and contribution limits can vary based on the child’s situation and family circumstances, so it is worth reviewing the numbers before deciding how much to contribute.

Your corporation can help build your retirement -- but simply leaving money inside the company is not the same as having a retirement strategy.

The bigger question is: how will that money eventually support you personally, tax-efficiently, and without creating unnecessary problems later?

Most families don’t need a bigger income as much as they need a clear plan for the income they already have.

Here’s one example of how a $180,000 household income in Ontario could be organized across:
🏠 Home & essentials
🚗 Transportation
🛡️ Family protection
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Lifestyle & experiences
📈 Investing & future goals
💰 Emergency savings

The exact numbers will look different for every family. The point isn’t to follow this budget dollar-for-dollar — it’s to make sure today’s spending, protection and tomorrow’s goals are all competing fairly for the same paycheque.

A good financial plan should help you live today without losing sight of tomorrow.
