The Supreme Court of Canada refused to hear an appeal by the Wolastoqey Nation. By declining to hear the appeal, the Court allowed a New Brunswick Court of Appeal ruling to stand that said Aboriginal title cannot be declared over privately owned land.
YES , THIS AFFECTS COWICHAN!
he New Brunswick Court of Appeal had ruled that:
----Indigenous nations may pursue Aboriginal title claims over Crown land.
For land that is privately owned (homes, farms, businesses, industrial land), courts cannot declare Aboriginal title that would override those private ownership rights.
--Indigenous groups may still seek compensation or damages from governments for historical loss of land.--
Makes eminant sense!

Yes, we are doing it again.

I don’t want to do the Plunge into the frigid waters of English Bay but at the same time, I can’t say no to helping Special Olympics and all the children and adults with intellectual disabilities like Down Syndrome, autism and Fragile X....
Although I haven’t forgotten how ice cold the water was last year.

But then I think there are times in life when you have to stand up and be counted. So, I’m in.

For years I’ve said that children and adults with intellectual disabilities are too often the forgotten people in our communities. But it’s more than that. At the best of times, too often people with intellectual disabilities live in isolation in our communities.

For most of the athletes Special Olympics provides the only connection to the community at large. It’s where they make friends. As one of our athletes said, "before I joined Special Olympics I didn't know there were other people like me."
It’s not often we can change people’s lives, bring such joy and help create friendships where none existed before but that’s exactly what happens with Special Olympics, which is why I’m asking for your help – and there are two ways.

Rudy Nielsen
It is with deep sadness and profound respect that I share the passing of my dear friend Rudy Nielsen — a true pioneer, visionary, and one of British Columbia’s most remarkable land entrepreneurs.
Rudy lived a life that was wild, courageous, full of adventure — he was a force of nature who chose to live boldly every day.
He began his career selling vacant lots in Prince George in the 1960s and where he founded the Niho Land and Cattle Co.
Yellowhead Realty in 71 was next, growing to multiple offices through sheer grit and drive. He worked constantly, took risks, and believed in building something meaningful.
In 1981 Rudy lost everything. It would have been easy to walk away from his debt but not Rudy - he rebuilt. Between 1982 and 1983 he sold hundreds of properties and repaid every dollar he owed. His word mattered — his integrity was real.
Rudy’s journey didn’t stop there. Over the next decade he completed over 700 land deals — from 30,000-acre estates to oceanfront and riverfront properties (whole towns even) — and became one of the largest private recreational landowners in British Columbia. He saw value where others didn’t, and acted with vision and courage.
He didn’t just build land portfolios — he built innovation. In 1996 he founded LandQuest Realty and in 2000 launched Landcor Data Corporation — transforming how real estate data and valuations are understood in our province. Rudy’s forward-thinking work was recognized when he received the Real Estate Institute of British Columbia’s Medal of Excellence for Ingenuity, celebrating his bold ideas and lasting impact on the industry.
At my Landrush conferences he was the most respected and gifted speaker teaching 500 plus people a love for the outdoors, the land and a life worth living.
Rudy lived by the words of John Wayne: “Courage is being scared to death… and saddling up anyway.” That was Rudy — always saddling up, always pushing forward.
Thank you, Rudy — for your friendship, your mentorship, your grit, and your fearless spirit. You will be deeply missed, and your legacy will live on in every acre you saw differently and every life you inspired.
Heaven does not know yet, but I am sure that every cloud in heaven soon will have trees on it.
