Scam-Proof: Older Canadians Remain Sharp Against Rising AI Fraud Threats.

Nearly 7 in 10 Canadians 55+ report being able to easily spot scams
77 per cent of Baby Boomers acknowledge the rapid advancement of AI technology and the continuous adaptation of scammers
Ongoing education is critical to staying one step ahead of AI-enhanced scam strategies
TORONTO – March 3, 2025 – A new survey from Ipsos and HomeEquity Bank, provider of the CHIP Reverse Mortgage, reveals Baby Boomers are more adept at detecting AI-driven scams than previously thought. The study highlights that nearly 7 in 10 (68 per cent) Baby Boomers are aware of the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) by scammers, debunking the myth that this generation lacks digital awareness. As the exponential evolution of AI technology continues to enhance social-engineering strategies, Canadians of all ages need to stay up to date on new scams.

“AI technology is dramatically changing how scammers target Canadians, making tactics more personal and sophisticated,” said Yvonne Ziomecki-Fisher, Chief Customer, Brand & Advice Officer, HomeEquity Bank. “While Canadians 55+ are quite savvy in spotting scams, they are historically targeted more frequently than younger generations. This has sparked a shift in their communication habits, showcasing their resilience and adaptability in the face of these challenges.

Older Canadians (55+) are taking practical steps to safeguard their information, with 75 per cent ignoring calls requesting urgent updates to personal information and 74 per cent letting unknown numbers go to voicemail. However, the rapid adoption and evolution of AI technologies designed to fraudulently manipulate Canadians into divulging sensitive information underscores the need for ongoing fraud prevention education across all age groups.

The three fastest-growing AI scams are AI-powered voice cloning, deepfake scams, and AI-driven phishing attacks, which are increasingly sophisticated and difficult to detect. Here’s a breakdown of these AI-powered scams:

AI-Powered Voice Cloning: Scammers use AI to replicate someone’s voice, allowing them to impersonate trusted individuals in phone calls or voice messages, often to solicit money or personal information.
Deepfake Scams: AI is used to create realistic but fake videos or images of individuals, which can be used to spread misinformation, damage reputations, or facilitate fraud.
AI-Driven Phishing Attacks: AI is employed to create highly personalized and convincing phishing emails or messages, making it harder for victims to recognize them as scams.
“While older Canadians have become quite savvy at spotting scams on social media where someone is impersonating a family member or a friend, AI has changed the game,” said Marc Saltzman, Tech Expert. “New, widely accessible and easy-to-use AI tools allow scammers to generate the most convincing movie-quality visuals and voices that can fool almost anyone. It’s critical that Canadians make staying up to date on the latest scam tactics part of their routine to protect their information and their wellbeing.”

HomeEquity Bank is committed to providing resources to help its clients and all Canadians stay ahead of fraud. Anyone who wants to test their scam-sense is invited to take the quiz or check out fraud prevention resources at CHIP.ca/fraud.

10-Year Real Growth Estimate (%).

As we look ahead, it does not look that promising. Looking for a better chance perhaps we should start looking abroad. As Canada simply does not make anything...How far do we need to fall...Even our natural resources are being bought up by foreign entities and conglomerates abroad.
One wonders just what Canada in the future will have to offer other than tax on the backs of the middle class?

Canadians Over 75: Financially Stable, Well-Connected and Ready for More, But Folks in their 50s not so sure
TORONTO, ON (October 1, 2024) – A new survey commissioned by HomeEquity Bank reveals Canadian homeowners aged 75 and older are outshining their younger counterparts on key happiness markers, offering an insightful guide for younger generations entering a new life stage.

According to the survey, 95 per cent of Canadians 75 and older are very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with their lives, compared to just 79 per cent of Canadians in their 50s.

“Our purpose is to empower Canadian homeowners 55+ to have the freedom to do what they love for as long as they can and age with dignity in the home they love,” says Katherine Dudtschak, President and CEO of HomeEquity Bank. “Our latest study unpacks different happiness markers for Canadians and how they shift as they age. We found a sharp distinction between those approaching retirement and those well into it.”

Triangle Of Happiness

HomeEquity Bank used markers of happiness—financial stability, quality connections and sense of purpose—to frame the questions in the study. The results show:

Financial Stability
Just 48 per cent of Canadians in their 50s are feeling very good or even excellent about their finances, but that number jumps to 68 per cent at 75+
Being able to handle a major unexpected expense, a key indicator of financial wellness, also improves with age (55 per cent versus 75 per cent)
Quality Connections
Feeling connected and experiencing quality friendships actually improves as people age from their 50s to being 75+ (70 per cent versus 85 per cent)
Living in homes in good order and enjoyed by family members, another marker of connection, improves with age (81 per cent versus 89 per cent)
Sense of Purpose
Staying active in their communities shows a wide gap between those in their 50s and those 75+ (30 per cent versus 48 per cent)
Giving back to the community and supporting charitable causes also increases with age (34 per cent versus 51 per cent)
The top anxieties among homeowners in their 50s include outliving retirement savings, not having enough to support themselves and the ability to leave behind a legacy they can be proud of. This concern is exacerbated by a shifting retirement landscape, which includes Canadians ageing with more debt, limited cash savings and shrinking pensions, while living longer with increasing and varied healthcare needs.

“To be fulfilled, you need to look at all facets of your life,” says Vivianne Gauci, Senior Vice President of Customer Experience, HomeEquity Bank. “Financial stability is a fundamental part of living a healthy and fulfilling life, but it’s not the only factor. Connections and purpose have critical roles to play, which is why enjoying a happy retirement requires a holistic approach.”

HomeEquity Bank is taking steps to bridge the gap to fulfillment as Canadians age by raising awareness about the need for purpose and connection alongside financial stability. The Bank is sharing its research findings in a report, Attaining Freedom: Embracing Growth, Fulfillment, and Financial Health as We Age, that offers insights into the evolving needs and aspirations of Canadian homeowners 45+ as they aim to achieve a fulfilling and secure future.

YES! There is a Problem. Food Insecurity.

Food Bank Canada’s 2023 Hunger Count revealed there were nearly 2 million food bank visits in Canada in 2023, which is the highest level on record, and a 78.5% increase since March 2019. It will be higher this year and next year again!

Canada has seen a new high average of 22.5% Nationwide level of food insecurity.

Compromising in the quality or quantity of food we once use to take for granted. Ring a bell?

Who is to blame. They will tell you this and that but the reality is the Government is to blame.

The problem starts with massive spending when we could have avoided it. While the 2008 global recession hit the Western World Canada had actually faired well, and had an opportunity to change the foundation of who and what Canadians are. We could have been one of the greatest and richest countries in the World. This was not to be, from Floating foreign currency valuations and global wealth distribution, massive uneducated migrant population growth, over growth of governament and a sell off of crown corporations and a lack of protection from foreign low wage manufacturing over the last 25 years has us now in a pecarious situation.

Blame the goverenment, Maybe put a little blame on ourselves for allowing it to happen in the first place!

We’ve all seen prices in grocery stores lately. Wherever you live in Canada, there is no question that grocery bills are getting more expensive. From 2021 to 2022, prices for food purchased from stores increased by 9.8% on average nationally.

Sweeping new layoffs in August announcement and a reality of the coming months are expected to see unemployment rise far above the current 6.8%(Ontario).

Stats Canada had Ontario in April at 6.8%. With every analyst "off its mark" (typically paid for or supported by some form of Bay Street financial). From FAO, TD and Deloitte predicts that Canada's economic struggles will be better but they all have noted less unemployment figures! How and why?
Don't scare the sheep perhaps.
September they most likely will lower the rates again, people will scramble to re-mortgage and have the money ready to buy back in the market. But is it a reality?
