I’m finally in place where I can do this.
On this snowy Thursday in January, working from home with one month removed from burying a loved, I can properly reflect.
Being a financial professional in the insurance space, my most common concern or objection is that insurance doesn’t pay out/insurance is a scam.
First of all, if protecting families were a scam, it would be biggest racket in human history. Second, after having paid out my 2nd death claim, I can attest that it’s very much not a scam.
Here’s the thing that no one tells you when you or a loved one passes away: money is needed RIGHT AWAY! As in as soon as you contact the funeral home to start making arrangements, they want their money right away. Then, factor in the other arrangements — the church, the flowers, the cemetery, police es**rt if you choose to have one — those also cost money.
But more importantly than that, there’s the emotional cost. Prior to, during and after everything is done, the emotional cost is high. There’s the tears, the sleepless nights, the acceptance that they are indeed gone, and the acknowledgment that their impact won’t be forgotten that stays with you
So where does life insurance come in? At the very least, it covers the financial costs for those final preparations so that you can have the capacity to grieve correctly with peace of mind. At best, it allows the family of the fallen to replace the financial impact of what that person would have had.
So while a person who was like a second mother to me is no longer here, I can rest easy knowing two things: 1. That I’m grateful that she had the confidence to trust me with her endeavours. And 2. Her family can rest easy knowing that she had the foresight to take care of things.
Life insurance is definitely and definitively not a scam!
