We just got back from the OACFP Educational Conference in Ottawa. This year’s theme was “Honouring Legacy,” which, as you can imagine, felt very close to home for us.

It was a great few days of learning and catching up with cemetery and funeral professionals from across Ontario. A big thank you, as always, to the Ontario Association of Cemetery and Funeral Professionals team and to everyone we connected with. We’re so proud to work alongside this profession.

Art and collectibles could represent close to $1 trillion of the wealth expected to transfer between generations over the next decade, according to Deloitte's latest Art & Finance Report.

Yet art is often treated as a passion project, separate from the rest of an estate plan, even though it carries real financial and emotional weight.

A few starting points for families with meaningful collections: get a proper inventory and current valuations, decide whether the goal is to keep the collection intact, sell, or donate, and bring these conversations into your broader estate planning early. A family trust is one option that can protect the collection, defer tax, and set clear direction for how it's displayed and passed down.

Something we're noticing: younger generations are starting to think about estate planning earlier than their parents did, but their priorities look different.

Digital assets. Causes they care about. Blended families that don't fit a one-size-fits-all plan. It's less about the "who gets the antique clock" conversation, and more about making sure the plan actually reflects how they live.

We think that's a good shift. A plan should always adapt to the people it's protecting, not the other way around.

A big name isn't the same as a secure one.

It was a pleasure to connect with funeral professionals across Newfoundland and Labrador for a day of learning, conversation, and continuing education. 💙

Our Business Development Officer, Susan Barrett, presented “Invest In Your Preneed” sharing practical insights into the opportunities within a strong pre-need program, from how trust funds work and grow, to building meaningful conversations with families, strengthening business practices, and supporting long-term sustainability.

A special thank you to Oram’s Funeral Homes and Dwayne Parsons of Country Haven Funeral Home, a valued LPT client, for hosting the sessions in person. We’re also grateful to our co-presenters, Jacob Rowe of Dodge Company (Canada) and the Association for New Canadians (ANC) (NL), for contributing their expertise to the educational program and helping make virtual participation possible.

Today is National Grief Awareness Day.

If you're not sure what to say to someone who is grieving, you're not alone. Most of us struggle to find the right words.

Sometimes the most meaningful support isn't about having the perfect response. It's simply being there. Listen without trying to fix the pain. Let them share memories when they're ready. Remember that grief has no timeline.

And if you're grieving today, give yourself grace. However you're feeling is valid. Grief doesn't follow a schedule, and healing isn't measured by how quickly you move forward.
