Getting calls from a debt collector can be stressful, especially when you're already dealing with financial difficulties. But did you know that debt collectors must follow rules about how and when they contact you?
In Canada, debt collectors aren't allowed to harass or threaten you, mislead you about what you owe, or disclose your debt to others except in certain circumstances.
You also have the right to ask for details about the debt, request written confirmation and review your options before agreeing to a payment arrangement.
Knowing your rights can help you respond to collection calls and recognize when a collector has crossed the line.
