Pleased to see the safety protocols in place on site for professional visit at the Toronto South Detention Center today - prerequisite of goggles & double masking to enter the institution. Unfortunately, the pandemic is far from over within our jails and prisons.

The adversities of the pandemic represent real opportunity. What better time for a strong look inward? To own and acknowledge the fact, we can and need to do better. It’s time to move forward with an openness to rational innovations, and, minimally, to restore the belief in the potential of rehabilitation. How cool would that be?! LSC

I’m the first to admit, the correctional system is challenging and complex. As a former criminal and inmate, I’ve met and lived with inherently violent, psychopathic and mentally ill inmates. A small number of which, for very real public safety reasons, should never be released.

Time to reassess sentencing principals and the value of incarceration in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Was recently on TVO’s The Agenda, invited to speak to the recent report from the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, and others, raising concerns about the increasing incarceration numbers within Canadian jails and prisons, in correlation with the COVID-19 pandemic. This led to my desire to fles...

I will be answering questions on CBC Radio this Wednesday between 8am and 8:30am about your rights under COVID. Or at least I will do my best, in this crazy upside down world!

It’s one of the big questions of this pandemic: What am I allowed to do under COVID-19, and what’s no longer permitted? If you have questions about your rights during the pandemic, CBC Ottawa wants to hear from you. It's for our weekly Q&A, answering your questions about how life has changed bec...

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/british-columbia/article-ralph-goodale-presses-corrections-commissioner-to-better-meet/ … hmmm The right tone, possibly cause for optimism, but, as Canada's correctional investigator notes, the letter is very broad.“What may be missing in this letter is how those broad commitments will be translated into concrete action”

Ongoing work to rule by federal front liners (UCCO-SACC-CSN) - including less yard time & increased lock downs - throughout the summer of 2018 due to the employer cutting overtime hours.

Ontario Region Reception (J.A.U. - Assessment Unit on A&B side of Joyceville Inst.) remains heavily overcrowded. Limited beds available in the Ontario Region has led to the creation of a makeshift 4 month "Multi Target Program" - forced transfers out of Province and to Collins Bay (refusal results in threat of segregation).

Therefore, unacceptably, typical stays in J.A.U. prior to classification to mother institutions now averaging approximately 6 months. Ever since the closure of Kingston Pen, the CSC simply does not have the capacity to accommodate all of Ontario Region's federal inmates.

The Harper legacy lingers. Keep waiting for but am growing skeptical...

One bright note to share. J.A.U. is running a pilot project for Skype like video visits - allowing for families to see their loved ones without leaving home. Presently there is only one computer up and running and only during limited weekday hours, but it is noteworthy and a step in the right direction. LSC

On July 31, 2018, at about 2 p.m., a lockdown was put in place at the Assessment Unit at Joyceville Institution to enable staff members to conduct an exceptional search.
