Global equity markets were relatively shaky last week in large part due to a pullback in technology stocks. Technology stocks, particularly those involved in the development of artificial intelligence, have been a key driver of equity markets over the last few years. There was some good news out of the Middle East where ships were making their way through the Strait of Hormuz, with experts predicting that shipping through the strait will bring millions of barrels of oil back into the global market. Oil prices have fallen since the US and Iran reached an interim peace agreement. Here’s what to watch for this week.

The US Fed held rates steady this week, but new Chair Kevin Warsh dropped the easing language, signaling rates may stay higher for longer rather than coming down soon. US markets dipped on the news with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both down 1%.

The Bank of Canada is also on hold for now. When US Rates stay higher than ours, investors chase the better return south of the border, which can weaken the Loonie and nudge up costs on the anything priced in USD.

Big news from the CIBC Capital Markets team - they just launched Canada's first ever Canadian Depositary Receipt (CDR) tied to an IPO.

SpaceX is now trading on the TSX under the ticker "SPCX-TO", CAD-hedged, so Canadians can invest in one of the worlds most talked about companies without the currency risk.

If you've ever wanted exposure to Space X but didn't know how, now you do.

more info:

Each CDR is equivalent to owning a variable number of the underlying shares. This is represented by a CDR ratio. The CDR ratio is adjusted on a daily basis to provide a notional currency hedge.
