The My Private Network podcast is back!

Coming back from our break, we're happy to say we'll be bringing back guests from previous episodes to dive deeper into their investment concepts and further explain their individual funds' due diligence on performance. Stay tuned!

But before those episodes roll out, this week we're taking a look at bonds. Have you ever questioned or analyzed how bonds have garnered nearly $422 billion CAD, yet your returns seem to be disappointingly low?

Our host, Bob Simpson, challenges your ways of thinking when it comes to this traditional investment class and aims to educate investors when it comes to:

1. Understanding the impact of fees on returns: When people think of fees, they automatically focus on equities. As a percentage, fees, including both manager and advisor fees have a significantly larger effect on your returns.

2. Challenging traditional portfolio strategy: In traditional 60/40 or 40/60 portfolio structures, bonds have been the natural choice for the conservative portion of portfolios. That worked when rates were high and falling but in a relatively low interest rate environment, they have been a drag on performance.

3. Exploring private lending markets: Bob suggests considering private lending, Mortgage Investment Corporations or mortgage funds as alternatives to bond funds, offering higher returns after fees and good spreads over bonds, bond funds and GICs.

4. Diversification: Bob advises on the importance of focusing on: Senior secured (first to be repaid in the event of a default). Asset-based (assets are based on the value of balance sheet assets) and short-term (typical maturities of 12 – 18 months).

5. Be The Bank: Instead of lending your money to Canada’s major banks, invest in pools, for diversification, and lend money through professional managers in similar loans or mortgages.
