Today’s publication outlines a challenging global economic situation where usual market correlations are flagging, particularly with the U.S. dollar’s performance and the Canadian dollar’s drift from oil prices. While survey-based data show a clear softening in consumer and business sentiment in the U.S., hard economic figures on growth and employment remain resilient.

Tariff-related headlines have dominated the financial press this year as President Trump’s proposal to impose significant levies on key trading partners has heightened uncertainty. Even if tariffs are ultimately not implemented, the looming threat is weighing on consumer and business sentiment. This, in turn, could begin to affect “hard” data points like GDP and employment if uncertainty causes consumers to roll back consumption and businesses to halt investment and/or hiring plans. Given the potential for self-inflicted harm, the US administration may need to rethink its strategy on trade. Until we get some clarity on this, however, markets will continue to react to trade-related headlines, resulting in higher volatility than we have seen over the last couple of years.

US President Donald Trump followed through on his threat of imposing 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. The measures are scheduled to take effect on March 12 and were authorized under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, the same avenue President Trump had used to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum in his first term.

2024 was another strong year for markets, with global equities registering a second consecutive year of double-digit gains. Market volatility was also muted for much of the year, apart from a couple of brief spikes in early August and mid-December. Calm market conditions prevailed despite the U.S. presidential election, ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and high interest rates. These factors were offset by healthy corporate earnings, easing inflation and central bank policy rate cuts.
