If I had to put all my long-term investment money into one single ETF, VT would be a very strong candidate.
VT β Vanguard Total World Stock ETF is basically the idea behind investing in the S&P 500, but expanded to the entire world.
A few things that make it interesting:
π Extremely diversified: ~10,000 stocks across developed and emerging markets.
π Automatic & passive: It is market-cap weighted, so the portfolio naturally adjusts as companies, sectors, and countries grow or shrink. You don't have to guess who will win over the next 20β50 years.
π Strong long-term performance: About 9% annualized since its 2008 inception and roughly 11% annualized over the last 10 years.
π° Very low cost: 0.06% MER.
The idea is simple: instead of trying to pick the winners, own the winners β wherever they are in the world.
The main downside for Canadians: VT trades in USD. A similar Canadian-listed option is VXC, which trades in CAD.
Maybe the simplest investment strategy is simply to own the world. π
Worth a read.
