Does Car Insurance Cover Hit a Run Accidents?
When another driver has damaged your vehicle in a hit and run accident, it should not affect your premium if you follow these steps:
✔️ Call 911 if you were in the vehicle when it was hit or if someone is injured. Collect as many details as you can about the vehicle – colour, make, model, license plate number.
✔️ Collect information from witnesses and get their contact information in case the police or insurance company needs to reach them
✔️ Take photos of the collision and vehicle damage if it’s safe to do so.
✔️ Report the hit and run to the police within 24 hours as it is considered a crime. The police may advise you to go to a collision reporting centre. Write down the officer’s name, badge number and phone number so your insurer can follow up.
