Building Wealth with Brett You should have a game plan when a major life event puts your money in motion. But when money moves, mistakes get expensive. No pressure.

Financial strategies for Canadians facing inheritance, job change, separation, business sale or retirement—with a hockey heartbeat. That could be:
• Receiving an inheritance / settling an estate
• Changing jobs (pension options, severance, bonus, stock compensation, benefits changes)
• Divorce or separation
• Selling a business or receiving a major payout
• Selling real estate / downsizing
• Approaching retirement
• Losing a spouse or parent

These moments can feel exciting, stressful, emotional, and overwhelming all at once and the natural reaction is to act quickly. My role is to help you slow the play down, look at the full ice, and build a clear financial game plan before you invest, transfer, spend, or lock in a decision that’s hard to undo. Strategy work often includes:
• Investment planning
• Retirement income strategy
• Cash flow & banking structure
• Tax-aware planning (coordinated with your accountant)
• Insurance & risk management
• Estate planning coordination
• Pension and group plan decisions
• Business owner planning and liquidity events
• Planning support during separation and major transitions

My style is simple:
No jargon. No one-size-fits-all advice. Just clear conversations and a process that helps you understand your options before you act. And yes — the hockey theme is intentional. Good planning is a lot like a good power play: patience, structure, and knowing your options before you force the play. Ready to start building your financial game plan? Let’s drop the puck and dive in.

You can say I haven’t decided it yet.

Even when someone asks what you’ll do with your inheritance.
Even when family needs help
Even when you’ve already pictured paying off the house.

Receiving money doesn’t mean you owe anyone immediate decision.

Before committing, give yourself time to ask.

What do I need this money to do for me?
What would I regret agreeing to?
Am I making this choice because I want to, or because I feel pressure?

You can write down your options without acting on them today.

If money is in motion in your life right now, don’t treat it like a quick transaction.

Treat it like a turning point.

An inheritance is not just a deposit.

A pension decision is not just paperwork.

A severance package is not just a payout.

A divorce settlement is not just an agreement.

A business sale is not just a cheque.

A real estate sale is not just proceeds.

Retirement is not just leaving work.

These moments can affect taxes, income, family, estate planning, insurance, and long-term flexibility.

That’s where planning matters.

At Uptown Wealth Management,
I help Canadians navigate major Money in Motion moments with a clear financial game plan.

Before you make plans for your inheritance, ask one question:

Is this the amount I’ll actually receive?

A number mentioned in a will or a family conversation isn’t enough to build your plan around.

Ask the executor:
Is this an estimate or a confirmed distribution?
Have taxes, debts, and estate expenses been accounted for?
When should I expect the money?

Get those answers before you promise money to family, pay off your mortgage, or commit to a purchase.

Expecting an inheritance? Send me a DM to arrange a 15- minute intro call.

Not birdies.

Not eagles.

Bogies.

This might sound like a simple question.

But what would you do if money moved?

Meaning you got an inheritance, you received your pension, you sold a business, or some other big life moment?

Because it usually opens the door to a lot more questions:

What should stay liquid?
What could be taxable?
What deadlines matter?
What paperwork needs to be reviewed?
What decision is hard to undo?
How does this affect retirement?
Who else needs to be involved?

If you’re in a Money in Motion moment, you don’t need to force the next play.

You need a clear game plan.

Download the Money in Motion Transition Checklist and use it to slow the play down before your next move.

Well… the golf game was going fine until my putter decided it had enough.

I wish I could say it broke because of one powerful, dramatic shot.

But no 😄

Just one of those random moments where you look down and think, “That’s probably not supposed to happen.”

It made me laugh.

You can be prepared, show up ready… and still have something unexpected happen.

You can’t control everything.

But you can slow down, reassess, and make the next move with a little more intention.

And yes, I’ll be accepting putter recommendations.

A pension in an RSP can both fund retirement, but they do not work the same way.

Your pension usually follows a schedule. RSP withdrawals give you more flexibility.

That flexibility can be valuable.

In some years, taking money from your RSP early may help smooth out taxable income over retirement instead of leaving too much sitting there until later.

But the right order depends on your pension income, RSP balance, other assets, tax bracket, and how much income you actually need.

The mistake is assuming there is one rule that works for everyone.

Before deciding what to spend first, look at the full retirement picture.

Follow for practical guidance when money is in motion.

Most people try to pay the least tax this year.

That’s usually the wrong game.

If retirement income matters to you, save this because the better move is often managing tax across your whole retirement, not just one year at a time.

This is the kind of decision that looks expensive today and smart later.

What’s your biggest retirement tax question right now?

Most people don’t realize the “obvious” financial move can still create a problem.

Paying off debt might feel smart.
But what if it leaves you with no cash buffer?

Investing a lump sum might make sense.
But what if you need part of it for taxes in six months?

Keeping the house after separation might feel emotionally important.
But what if the monthly cash flow doesn’t work?

Taking control of a pension might sound appealing.
But what are you giving up in exchange?

This is why financial decisions during major life transitions should not be made one move at a time.

When money is in motion, you have to see the full ice.

One in soccer gear.
One in hockey gear.

My boys. Different sports. Different seasons. Different schedules.

As a parent, you spend a lot of time driving, cheering, watching, supporting, and trying to keep up with all the moving parts.

But then you get a photo like this and are reminded why it matters.

Sports teach kids so much more than a game.

They learn how to show up.
How to be part of a team.
How to handle pressure.
How to keep going when things don’t go their way.
How to celebrate the wins and learn from the losses.

And those are lessons that carry far beyond the field or the rink.

Proud of these two and grateful for the front-row seat.
