One of the hardest parts of estate planning is that the steep learning curve often shows up at the worst possible time.

This became clear in a recent client meeting. The client was uncertain about the difference between being a Power of Attorney and an Executor — two roles that are often confused, even by people who care deeply about getting it right. To be honest, they didn't really know they were uncertain about it until after I explained the difference.

As we talked it through, they realized just how different the responsibilities are:
A Power of Attorney acts for you while you’re alive but incapacitated.
The Executor's role begins after you die.

It’s a brutal, on-the-job training exercise for whoever steps into these roles, and it reminded me how often we, as professionals, assume clients understand what we consider “basic” — when in reality, they may never have had a reason to think about it.

Imagine being asked to start a brand new job the day after your loved one passes away — and having to learn everything as you go.
