Good business
isn't always profitable

Farming and Ranching
is good business

Canada has stacked the odds against agri-businesses being profitable
and shown no clear understanding of how
or perhaps willingness to
fix that

Farms and Ranches without sufficient profit
to reinvest in operations, research, development, succession plans and staffing
- can't afford to adapt as they wish to adapt,
- can't fully position themselves to be ready for changes they see coming
and
- are hard-pressed to weather challenges they never chose, but can't avoid.

You could argue farming takes land
and land is valuable
so farmers are wealthy!

But you'd be conflating the value of an asset you cannot sell
without going out of business
with profitability
perhaps even with sustainability

I was humbled by the heart and hard work
of the ranchers I met crossing the less-traveled roads
of southern Saskatchewan and Alberta last week.

It got me thinking about revolution
about sowing the seeds of change
and pulling books off shelves once I got home to add facts to those fiery thoughts!

Fit matters
One size does not fit all

Measures of success rooted in mass manufacturing for international export, for example
Ill-fit heath care services, education and neighbourhood-scale services - for example.
But that is the mis-match skewing Canada's economic and social systems, disadvantaging most sectors.
Solutions are knocking!

Addressing the housing gap often focuses on rehousing those traumatized by homelessness.
Which is an urgent need of infrastructure and service, certainly!
But this week on Something Different This Way Comes I think about what might help more of us never fall into homelessness or hunger.
I get communal.

I mean I could not have transitioned into independent adulthood without roommates and shared meals.
Yet many grown ups thinking transitioning back into communal living with non-family later in life would be a social or economic failure.
What if we change that mindset?
And re-open the world of:
roomies, collectives, boarding houses and renting
to the middle class and educated?
Socially and physically.

But first, to the young just emerging into adult autonomy!

Getting past the weeds, right into the soil
A precious resource we need to cherish and restore
In order to make it through this poly-crisis that is just starting to unfold.

Regenerative agriculture! SO worth the investment
But making that investment is beyond the capacity of most Canadian Farms.
Fixing that is SUCH a good idea.
Not an easy one to make happen - but worth the effort!

Popping Market Bubbles
I not only foresee - I will welcome!

Because our long-term investment options
Are overdue for diversification
sufficient to move it from representing only the Global-scale enterprises in our economy,
to supporting and reflecting the entirety of our money-based economy

I think those with the microphones HATE that notion.
But the other 99.99% of us should welcome that upgrade with open arms.
It would do us good on many fronts, relatively easily

Though there will be screeching from the minority who hold the stage
and markets will need time to correct in response to this systemic shift.

Any investment portfolio worth it's salt is built to weather market corrections!

And the economic seas on the far side of this particular storm
will offer us all much smoother sailing!
