⚠️ Tax Season Wake-Up Call

Most people think taxes are just something you deal with once a year.

File. Refund (maybe). Move on.

But the truth is 👇

The biggest difference between people who struggle in retirement and those who don’t… is planning.

Tax planning isn’t just about this year’s return.
It’s about keeping more of your money over your lifetime.

💡 The earlier you plan:
• The more tax you can potentially save
• The more you can grow for retirement
• The more control you have over your future

Don’t just ask:
“How big is my refund?”

Start asking:
“How much tax can I save over my lifetime?”

Your future self will thank you.

🌍 Markets Wake Up to a New Risk Reality
Global markets opened the week on edge as geopolitics, not earnings, set the tone.
Overnight headlines tell a clear story:
• Stocks slide globally as investors shift into risk‑off mode
• Oil surges on fears of supply disruption
• Gold and the U.S. dollar strengthen on safe‑haven demand
• Defense stocks rise while airlines and growth names retreat
Periods like this can feel uncomfortable—but historically, market pullbacks often create opportunity. When prices reset and sentiment turns cautious, long‑term investors are able to add quality assets at more attractive valuations.
Volatility is back in the driver’s seat.
Risk management matters—but so does perspective.
📉 Market stress tests conviction.
📈 It can also reward patience.

📈 Monday Market Update – Nov 24

🤖 AI Trade Returns

- Nvidia crushed earnings → sparked an instant AI rally.
- Semiconductors & Magnificent Seven surged, even laggards joined.
- Debate on AI bubble vs real growth continues, but sentiment reset.
- Jensen Huang’s vision back in focus; short sellers warn: avoid betting against true AI leaders.

🇨🇦 Canada Inflation

- 2.2% headline, core softer → BoC gets breathing room.
- Expect temporary rise near 3% by Jan (base effects).
- Trend: stability inside target by Q1 → one more rate cut in March possible.

🇺🇸 U.S. Jobs

- 119K jobs added, beat expectations, but…
- Unemployment up to 4.4% (4-year high), wages soften.

📊 Market Update – Nov 17

🇺🇸 U.S. Government Reopens:
After 43 days and 14 failed votes, the U.S. government is back open. Markets initially rallied but quickly shifted into a classic “sell the news” move. The real win: economic data finally returns after a 6-week blackout. September jobs data should drop first, while October numbers may be messy and distort comparisons well into 2026.

💼 Burry Shuts Down Scion:
Michael Burry—the “Big Short” investor—deregistered Scion Asset Management, freeing himself from SEC reporting. He’s been loudly skeptical of the AI boom, arguing big tech is stretching depreciation schedules to make profits look smoother. His bearish stance fits the broader trend of short sellers struggling in a market that keeps pushing higher.

🎬 Disney Shares Slide:
Disney fell 8% after missing revenue expectations and warning of higher film-release costs next quarter. EPS beat at $1.11, but the entertainment division dropped 6% and operating income plunged 35%. Even slight disappointments are getting punished this earnings season.

💻 All Eyes on Nvidia:
This week’s Nvidia earnings could be the defining moment of the quarter, setting the tone for tech and AI markets heading into year-end.

🚨 Market Update – Nov 4 🚨

BoC slashes rates to 2.25%, lowest since 2022. Growth forecast downgraded, inflation sticky at ~3%, and softening investment & exports show challenges ahead. Another cut in December? Only if the data demands it.

Fed also cuts to 3.75–4%, ending quantitative tightening Dec 1. Growth “moderate,” job gains slow, inflation ticking up — markets shrugged it off.

Earnings spotlight:

Alphabet beats, thanks to cloud momentum ☁️

Meta warns of higher spending, cautious outlook 📉

Microsoft steady, Azure strong, but expectations weigh on stock

OpenAI IPO teased for late 2026/2027 with eye-popping valuation 💰

💡 Takeaway: Central banks are cautious, markets digest earnings, and growth data will dictate the next moves. Stay tuned — the headline-grabbing numbers keep coming.

📊 Market Update:
Markets can’t seem to make up their mind — the S&P 500 swung back and forth this week as traders reacted to every headline about U.S.–China tariffs. A few optimistic soundbites sparked brief rallies, but they didn’t last long once investors realized there was nothing new behind the comments.

💰 Gold stole the spotlight.
The metal broke above $4,200/oz for the first time ever, as investors looked for safety from all the uncertainty. Demand for gold has rarely been this strong. Momentum is incredible — and if history repeats, it could soon test $4,300. Even though gold looks technically overbought, sentiment is still bullish, and more analysts are calling it a “must-own.”

🛢️ Oil is lagging.
Prices slipped again on trade worries, oversupply concerns, and fading risk premiums from the Middle East. For now, gold is carrying the torch for commodities.

💎 Europe saw a surprise bright spot.
Luxury giant LVMH bounced back with its first sales growth in two quarters — proof that the global consumer isn’t out of steam just yet.

🏦 Big banks delivered solid results.
JPMorgan, Citi, Goldman Sachs, and others beat expectations, boosted by stronger investment-banking activity and rising interest income.

With earnings season ramping up, investors may finally get something real to focus on — not just the headlines.

🌎 Market Update: All Eyes on Earnings Season

📈 Stocks keep breaking records — but the next big story is Q3 earnings.
Nearly 70% of companies will report by month-end, and as usual, all eyes are on the Magnificent Seven (Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Nvidia, and Tesla).

💡 Expectations are modest — growth is slowing and margins are tighter — but analysts still expect big tech to beat forecasts, with earnings up ~14%, compared to 6% for the S&P 500 overall.

🤖 AI spending remains the big question. Cloud giants’ infrastructure investments are up 75% year-over-year, though that pace may cool soon.

💵 In currency markets, the U.S. dollar is strengthening as the yen and euro weaken, driven by political shifts in Japan and Europe and cautious signals from the Fed.

🛢️ Oil prices edged higher as OPEC+ held output steady and U.S. gasoline inventories dropped. Traders are betting demand will stay firm — at least for now.

🔜 Next up: Earnings season kicks off next week, along with fresh inflation data. Expect some volatility — and maybe a few surprises.

Tax-Loss Harvesting: Even Your Portfolio Deserves a Silver Lining

Lost money in the market? Congratulations—you might’ve just earned yourself a tax break. 🎉

Tax-loss harvesting is the art of turning financial heartbreak into a CRA-approved deduction. You sell your losing investments (yes, even that stock your cousin swore was “the next Tesla”), and use the loss to offset gains elsewhere. Boom—lower taxes.

But beware the 30-day “superficial loss” rule: if you buy back the same investment too soon, the CRA says “Nice try, buddy” and voids your loss. So don’t get clingy.

🚫 Doesn’t work in RRSPs or TFSAs
✅ Works in taxable accounts
🧠 Works best with a little planning and a lot of emotional detachment

Remember: sometimes you have to let go of losers to win with the CRA.

📊 "RRSP or TFSA?

The answer depends on your tax bracket now vs. in retirement. High earners often benefit more from RRSPs for the deduction today, while TFSA withdrawals are tax-free later. A mix can be powerful."
