This morning the Bank of Canada raised rates once again by 0.25% bringing the bank prime rate from 6.95% to 7.20%. Variable rate mortgage holders will see payments rise by approx $15.50 per $100,000 of mortgage. The. And of Canada intends to monitor data going forward to determine future rate decisions, however concerns remain around stubborn inflation issues, therefore rate cuts remain a rather distant possibility.

Today's statement form Bank of Canada indicated they want to pause in order to better assess the impacts of previous rate hikes on the economy. They remain steadfast in their target of reaching 2% inflation and ongoing data will guide them in future decisions. It is very possible that April or June will see a small further increase to rates if the economy continues to be strong and inflation remains stubbornly high.

The next rate announcement is April 12 2023.

A 7th consecutive rate increase by Bank of Canada this morning of 50bps bringing mortgage prime rate to 6.45%. BUT signalling as well there may well be a pause to the increases going forwards.
