I heard a quote recently that stuck with me:
“If you don’t have a plan, then it’s just an idea.”
It immediately made me think about hiking.
When we head out on a trail, we usually look at the map first.
Not because we need to know every step we’ll take.
Not because we expect the trail to go exactly as planned.
But because we want a general idea of where we’re going, which trail to follow, and where we’ll hopefully end up.
There might be unexpected turns.
A washed-out section.
A longer climb than expected.
But having a map gives us confidence to keep moving forward.
Retirement is a little like that.
Most people have a pretty good idea of what they want it to look like.
More time with family.
Travel.
Less stress.
More freedom.
The dream isn’t usually the problem.
The challenge is having a roadmap to help get there.
Because retirement itself isn’t really a plan.
It’s a destination.
And just like a hike, the destination is easier to reach when you have some idea of the route you’re taking.
You don’t need to have every answer figured out today.
But having a plan can make the journey feel a whole lot less uncertain.
What’s one thing on your retirement “trail map” that you’re looking forward to most?
