I’ve been seeing a lot on social media and in direct messages about how “it’s not all about the money” or “mission over commission” from various recruiting models in the insurance industry. I have to respectfully disagree.

The "Compensation Conversation" is crucial, yet many companies tend to overlook it, often under the guise of putting clients first. What I’m noticing is that more companies—or the top individuals within them—are significantly increasing their personal income at the expense of new agents or those doing the work. This leads to severe retention issues, with some companies boasting retention rates of less than 30% after three years. The problem arises because new agents are not fairly compensated and struggle to earn a living, while a small top percentage continue to earn more.

If you’re considering a company with a “building style” MGA/IMO model, it’s essential to thoroughly review their compensation grid and understand who benefits most. If the top executives are getting the majority of the compensation instead of the agents who are directly serving families, then it’s clear where the focus lies.

When choosing a company to work with, make sure you understand their core values, culture, and compensation structure. Transparency is key!
