IMPORTANT AUTO INSURANCE UPDATE!

Big changes are coming to who is covered under your policy’s optional accident benefits.

As of July 1, 2026, these optional benefits will ONLY apply to:

- The named insured and their spouse
- Dependants of either
- Persons specified as drivers on the policy

What this means: Pedestrians, cyclists, and certain passengers may no longer be eligible for these optional benefits under your specific policy.

Do you know what you’re paying for on your auto insurance?

Starting July 1st, Ontario auto insurance is moving to a flexible system, meaning several benefits that used to be standard will now become OPTIONAL.

Here is what will no longer be automatically included in your base policy:

- Income Replacement: Pays a weekly amount if an accident keeps you from working.
- Non-Earner Benefits: Provides financial support if you don’t earn a salary but can no longer complete your daily routine.
- Caregiver Benefits: Helps cover childcare or relative care costs if you’re injured and can’t provide your usual unpaid care.
- Housekeeping & Home Maintenance: Pays for hired help to manage chores, yard work, and upkeep while you heal.

What does this mean for you? If you already have excellent health or disability perks through your employer, you might want to opt out of some of these to lower your premium. If you are self-employed or have dependants, you will likely want to keep them active!

Wondering what’s STAYING mandatory with the July 1st auto reform?

While many benefits are shifting to optional, your base policy will still automatically include:

- Medical & Rehabilitation: Covers essential recovery needs like doctor visits, chiropractic care, and physiotherapy.
- Attendant Care: Pays for personal care assistance for daily activities, such as bathing and dressing.
- Cost of Examinations: Remains a built-in inclusion to help assess your injuries.

While these base coverages are mandatory, you always have the option to purchase higher limits for extra peace of mind!

Starting July 1, 2026, Income Replacement benefits are moving from standard to optional. This is a big part of the new Ontario Auto Reform, and it’s all about giving you more control.

What is it? If you’re unable to work due to an auto accident, this benefit provides a weekly payment to help cover your bills while you recover.

Why the change?

- Already covered? If you have a great disability plan through your employer, you might choose to opt out of this on your auto policy to save on your premium.
- Self-employed or no work benefits? You’ll likely want to keep this protection active to ensure your household stays afloat if you’re sidelined.

Our Advice: Check your workplace benefits first! Then, give your Yarmouth Mutual agent a call. We’ll help you decide if opting in is the right move for your peace of mind.
