Rising Stars Youth Basketball Free basketball program in the South End and uptown Saint John, NB!! Grades 6 to 8: Mon & Fri, 7:30 - 9:00 p.m.

The Saint John Rising Stars Youth Basketball Club is a FREE youth sports program, established in the priority neighbourhood of Saint John’s South End in September, 2014. The program operates under the governance of the Boys and Girls Club of Saint John at the South End Community Centre. It serves boys and girls from grades 4-8 who might not otherwise have an opportunity to play. Although most of o

ur players come from the South - Central area of Saint John, we also have players from other parts of the city. Rising Stars offers an affirming environment and equal access, regardless of financial means, to quality coaching and appropriate skills development for players of varying abilities. We want our kids to have a positive experience of sport and chance to achieve their potential as athletes. We practice twice a week and play scrimmages, games with other Saint John leagues, tournaments and special events as appropriate to the development of our players. The cost of Rising Stars basketball is free; however, we expect our players to earn their time on the floor by always doing their best. We expect players to attend regularly, work hard, be respectful of teammates and coaches, and help with activities such as fundraising and organizing events. Located at

Registration is open now for the new BGC Basketball program, which starts on October 17. There will be two age groups: grades 3-5 and grades 6-8. It will be on Monday and Friday evenings at the club, 1 Paul Harris St., and there will be bus transportation available from the SECC.

Tonight's scrimmage was a great wrap to the Rising Stars Basketball program. We had a good turnout and a number of former players came to say goodbye.

Congratulations to our award winners. (As usual, we forgot to take pictures.) A total of 11 players were recognized for perfect attendance. Congratulations to Hameed, Arielle, Bennett, Chelsea, Claira, Idris, Matvii, Zoe, Caleb, Evan, and Ben. A special shout out to Ben Brideau for 5 YEARS perfect attendance!

Congratulations also to our most improved player award winners: Carson, Zoe, Arya, and Fayez.

After 11 years, Rising Stars has come to an end and will not be returning next season. We have had a great time and we hope all of you have too. A big thank you to the staff of the BGC and the South End Community Centre for everything you have done to make this program possible. Thank you to our sponsors. Thank you to the parents. Most of all, thank you to the players for your commitment and positive attitude and for letting us coach you. Keep your eyes open in the fall for information about possible new basketball programming from the BGC.

PRACTICE CANCELLED tonight, Monday, March 24, because of the impending snowstorm We will see you all on Friday, March 28, for awards day and the final scrimmage.

Although we almost never cancel, the worst of this storm is supposed to happen this evening, which could make it dangerous getting home. Safety first, but we will see you Friday.

Congratulations to Bantam 2, the Dark Knights, 2025 Starburst Cup champions.

Today's Saturday game day was lots of fun. The first mini game was a close-fought battle. Mini 3 team came back from a 10-point deficit to win by 1 against mini 2.

The second game began with the bacon finale. Mini 1 is the undefeated Lovehearts bacon champions. The game was another close fought battle, but mini 1 emerged on top.

In the older age group, bantam 1 forfeited in the consolation game because of a lack of players. However, both teams picked up a couple of players and we had a fun scrimmage anyway. In the final game, an undermanned RWE faced off against the Dark Knights. Despite a great effort on the part of RWE, the Dark Knights led from wire to wire to take the win.

Two weeks left! See you for practice on Monday. The last scrimmage day of the season will be Friday, March 28.

• 2:15 p.m. – Bantam 2 (Dark Knights) vs Bantam 3 (RWE)

Bus pickup and drop off available at the SECC.

Another fantastic game day today. In the first game between Mini 1 and Mini 3 Bananas, all the players on both teams scored. The second game between the Mini 2 Splash and Mini 4 was a close battle with some great defense and passing on both sides. The bacon points went to Mini 1 and Mini 4. (Mini 1 currently leads with 2 points and Mini 3 and 4 are tied for second with 1.)

The older group had round 2 of the Starburst Cup. In game 1, Bantam 3 RWE defeated Bantam 1 Fear of God Elite. The second game was a nail biter, in which the Bantam 2 Dark Knights defeated the Bantam 4 Ballers by one point at the final buzzer. The final round will be on March 15. Bantam 1 will take on Bantam 4 in the consolation game, while Bantam 3 RWE will face the Bantam 2 Dark Knights in the final.

No practice Monday because of family day. We'll see you all for scrimmage day on Friday.
