As a business owner you are always aware of rising costs of materials, labour, expenses, benefits, rent, the list can go on and on. You always try to stay a step ahead of things and try to keep costs down as much as possible. One way to help keep costs down is being proactive with health benefits. Instead of reacting to illness, focusing on employee health from the start will help keep long-term costs down, limit disruption and like we have discussed in previous posts improve productivity.
We know premiums for benefits increase year after year as you and your employees use them. If there are unexpected claims this could make rates jump significantly and we know not all illnesses can be stopped before they happen, there are some that could be with preventative measures. Encouraging early screening, routine checkups, have an Employee Assistance Program in place can all help with this. If employees are staying ahead of their health, they are more likely to take fewer sick days, their mental health will be better, and this will help lowering absenteeism.
By supporting preventative health benefits you are also strengthening your employer brand. This shows that you care about your employees, boosting their confidence in you as an employer, increasing satisfaction and morale, staying in the job longer, speaking highly of you in the public, creating less turnover within your company saving money on recruiting, hiring and training.
Take a look at what you offer in health benefits to your employees, see if there is anything you can add. If you do not an EAP (Employee Assistance Program) it might be a good thing to look into. For only a few extra dollars a month per employee it offers a wide variety of resources and benefits to your employees giving them more to access to help with their health as a whole.
