Maybe Canada should follow the example of Australia and get out of the auto industry. A quick search on ChatGPT suggests, “Too many manufacturers own too many factories and are loaded down with enormous fixed costs, plus Chinese expansion, plus slow-growing mature markets, add up to structurally intense competition.” This is a battle we cannot win, and Canada’s auto industry has been steadily shrinking for 25 years. Let’s invest in industries that have growth potential and draw on our many Canadian strengths. A tough thought for Canadians, especially for Ontarians, and it’s downright heartwrenching for those of us who live in St. Catharines.
