Wondering why a cash offer for your jewellery rarely matches its appraisal document?

It all comes down to purpose. Most appraisals are created for insurance, estimating the retail replacement cost if you had to buy the item brand new. A cash offer, however, reflects the liquidation value—the actual payout for the raw materials, such as precious metals and gemstones, in today's market.

Both numbers are accurate, but they measure completely different things.

Same weight. Very different size.

Ever wondered why a 10 oz gold bar is considerably smaller than a 10 oz silver bar?

The answer is density.

Gold has a density of approximately 19.3 g/cm³, while silver is approximately 10.5 g/cm³. That means gold is about 1.8 times denser than silver.

So while both bars contain the same 10 troy ounces by weight, the gold bar takes up significantly less physical space.

A simple example of how the properties of each precious metal shape the way we buy, store and handle bullion.

Unlike collectible coins, recognized bullion bars are primarily valued for their precious metal content. Clear markings for weight, purity and refiner help make them easier to identify, price and trade.

The 1 kg gold bar is one notable format. Its larger size can mean lower production premiums per ounce compared with smaller bars, while still offering a standardized form of physical gold that is widely recognized in global bullion markets.

Understanding the different sizes, refiners and premiums can help you make a more informed decision when exploring physical gold.

Over the past month, the silver market has shifted from relatively steady trading in the low $80s to a sharp move higher in early August, reaching above $91/oz before pulling back slightly.

From the chart, silver has moved roughly 8–10% higher over the period shown, with the strongest momentum coming in August.
