We can do better than this but it is a start and a positive effort to address Canada's housing crisis. Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Sean Fraser said on Tuesday that "We are living in a housing crisis, but it's not the first time Canada has been here. After the Second World War when many thousands of soldiers were returning home to be reunited with their families at once, Canada faced enormous housing crunches."
Now the federal government is launching consultations to revive a revised version of a wartime housing effort: a standardized pre-approved design catalogue, with the aim of helping speed up construction and re-deploy the development of simple pre-approved designs. Fraser went on to say, "We intend to take these lessons from our history books and bring them into the 21st century."
It is a good thought and I do think that pre approved plans for affordable homes can get built quicker. But the hard work will be in making this a modern day market based solution that can flourish. And more importantly many thousands of soldiers being repatriatred home after World War II, is a far cry from the one million new immigrants that are now coming into the country every year. And given Frasers previous role as immigration minister and recent comments supporting Canada to maintain it's aggressive immigration policy, he should know that tackling the housing crisis is going to take a lot more than bringing out old building plan sketch books.
