The hard facts about lung cancer in Canada are impossible to ignore. Today, lung cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canada — and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. An estimated 19,400 Canadians will die from lung cancer this year, more than breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers combined.
While advances in research and treatment over the past decade have led to the highest survival rates ever seen, nearly 70% of lung cancer cases are still diagnosed at a late stage, when options are limited and outcomes are poorer.
And the burden of lung cancer is shifting. Lung cancer now affects more women than men in Canada. In 2026, an estimated 17,500 women will be diagnosed, compared to 15,400 men — a profound and growing change that demands attention.
This needs to change. Awareness, earlier diagnosis, research, and equitable access to care can save lives.
