Your RSP doesn't disappear when you retire and it doesn't cash out either.

Most Canadians spend their whole working life contributing to their RSP without knowing that at retirement it rolls into something called a RRIF. The bucket name changes but the investments inside stay exactly the same. The difference is that the government now requires you to start taking money out every single year and most people have no idea how that works or what it means for their taxes.

TFSA withdrawals don't count as taxable income, which means they don't push you closer to the OAS clawback threshold. Gifts and inheritances don't count either. In a year where your other income sources are already high, your TFSA is the cleanest source of extra cash available.

If you want to understand how to structure your retirement income to protect your OAS, watch the full episode here ➡️ https://astrafinancial.ca/2026/05/04/how-the-oas-clawback-works-in-canada/

The OAS clawback affects more Canadian retirees than you’d think…

and in most cases it's not because of one large income source. It's because several smaller ones land in the same tax year.

In this episode, I walk through exactly how the clawback works, which income sources count toward it (including foreign income like US Social Security), and the five timing strategies we use with clients to reduce the impact before it happens.

TFSA withdrawals, RRIF timing, income splitting and planning for one-time events all play a role. The goal isn't to avoid every dollar of clawback. It's to understand how your income is structured so nothing catches you off guard.

The OAS clawback isn't calculated on your pension alone. It's based on every taxable income source combined: CPP, RRSP and RRIF withdrawals, investment income, rental income, capital gains and employment income all count toward the threshold.

A modest pension doesn't protect you if everything else pushes your total income over the line. If you want the full breakdown of how the clawback works and how to plan around it, watch the full episode here ➡️ https://astrafinancial.ca/2026/05/04/how-the-oas-clawback-works-in-canada/

The OAS clawback is calculated on your total taxable income from every source, not just your pension. Most people assume it won't apply to them because no single income source looks like the problem. The stacking effect is where it catches people off guard.

A few small timing decisions can make a significant difference. If you want to know exactly how to manage it, watch the full episode here ➡️ https://astrafinancial.ca/2026/05/04/how-the-oas-clawback-works-in-canada/

A financial plan showed a client they'd still have a million dollars sitting in their registered account at age 83. The strategy at that point is to turn up the tap.

Pull a little more out while you're in a lower tax bracket. Let it build in your bank account. And once you're above your sweet spot, you can start gifting it to your kids or grandkids while you're alive to enjoy it.
Our tax expert put it simply. Give it away now because you can see the smile on their faces when they receive it.

What would it feel like to head into retirement knowing your income is protected against the risks that catch most Canadians off guard?

That confidence comes from having a plan for the things most people overlook: inflation eroding your purchasing power, healthcare costs rising at every stage, emergency expenses hitting at the wrong time and gaps in your guaranteed income.

The Protecting Your Retirement Income mini course covers all four. You'll learn specific strategies for each one and get a worksheet to map out your own retirement income protection plan with real numbers. By the end, you'll know where you stand and what to do about any gaps.

It's free and it's designed specifically for Canadians.

We asked a tax expert the questions Canadian retirees are actually Googling right now.

We got into the real strategies, like which retirement income buckets to pull from first, how pension income splitting works between spouses, why the graduated tax system means a raise never hurts you and what actually happens to your RIF when you pass away (the answer surprised a lot of people).

This one is packed with examples and real numbers. Watch the full episode out here: https://astrafinancial.ca/2026/04/13/canadian-retirement-tax-questions/
