🌾 Myth or Fact: "If you do a bit of custom work for your neighbour — say, combining a few acres — it's automatically covered under your regular farm policy."
Harvest is almost here, and helping out a neighbour is just what farm communities do. But here's the thing: custom work coverage is all over the map, and most producers don't realize it.
Some companies will automatically include custom work up to a revenue cap, while many others exclude it outright. There's no standard, so you can't assume.
When you're operating on someone else's land or handling their crop, the liability picture changes. If equipment damages their crop, a fire starts in their field, or something goes wrong mid-job, you could be exposed personally — even if the exact same incident would've been covered on your own quarter. And custom work doesn't have to mean a paid contract; a favour for the neighbour counts too.
Before the combines roll, check with your broker. Ask: Is custom work covered? What revenue limits apply? What does your policy actually respond to?
