We would like to share some important things to consider in the event of a hail claim. Firstly, it is important to stay safe during the storm, prevent any further damage to your property the best you can, and talk to us to get further guidance on how to proceed. But here are some things you may not be aware that we would like to inform you on.
Document everything. Take pictures or videos of the damage when safe to do so and retain all correspondence with the adjuster.
If it is a catastrophic claim (150+homes in one storm), the adjusters will be very busy, have patience and respond as soon as you can with whatever they require. The more information they get, the faster the claim will proceed.
Any claim opened will be subject to the Wind & Hail deductible shown on your policy declaration page.
Exterior building materials such as shingles, fascia, soffit, and eavestroughs depreciate over time due to age and wear. As a result, the settlement amount may be reduced for depreciation, and you may be responsible for a portion of the replacement cost.
If you obtain an estimate and choose to accept a cash settlement instead of completing repairs through the insurance company, repairs to the damaged property are still required. Failure to complete repairs may result in reduced coverage, restrictions, or possible non-renewal of coverage at your next renewal.
If you decide to withdraw or close a claim after reporting damage, the repairs are still expected to be completed. Unrepaired damage may impact future coverage, renewal eligibility, or the availability of coverage for future wind or hail losses.
We recommend obtaining an estimate from a qualified contractor to determine the extent of the damage and repair costs prior to proceeding with a claim whenever possible.
Unfortunately, major storms often attract storm-chasing contractors and scammers. Before signing anything, make sure the contractor is licensed, avoid upfront payments to the contractor directly, and confirm your insurer has approved the scope of repairs before proceeding
