UPDATE: E-Bike Fire Causes an Estimated $500,000 in Damage

Peterborough Fire Services responded last night after a neighbour called 911 to report an explosion. Crews arrived to find an e-bike fully involved in flames beside a home.

The fire spread to a fence and the side of the home, extending into the attic. Everyone had evacuated before crews arrived, and firefighters quickly brought the fire under control. One occupant was treated by EMS at the scene.

The total damage is estimated at $500,000.

The incident is a reminder that lithium-ion batteries can pose a serious fire risk. Peterborough Fire Services recommends:

* Never overcharge devices or leave them charging unattended for long periods.
* Use the charger and cable recommended by the manufacturer.
* Don’t use a battery or device that is damaged, swollen, leaking or unusually hot.
* Follow the manufacturer’s charging and storage instructions.

Check your smoke alarms, too. Test them regularly and make sure you have one on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas. Working smoke alarms provide an early warning so you can get out safely.

🍂Winterizing Your Cottage - Before you close up for the season, take a few minutes to make sure your cottage is ready for the colder weather. Here are some important winterizing tips to help protect your property and avoid potential insurance headaches.

-Turn off the main water supply and completely drain all pipes, toilets, tanks, and water heaters.
-Add RV/marine antifreeze to toilets, drains, and plumbing traps.
-Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses and exterior water lines.
-If not draining the system, maintain continuous heat at the minimum temperature required by your insurer.
-Secure windows, doors, and outbuildings, and remove valuables.
-Clean gutters, inspect the roof, and clear debris to reduce winter damage risks.
-Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and replace batteries.
-Arrange regular property inspections if required by your insurance policy.

Important: Many Ontario cottage insurance policies require proper winterization or regular monitoring of unoccupied properties. Failure to meet policy conditions could affect coverage for frozen pipes, water damage, or other winter-related claims. Review your policy or contact your broker for specific requirements.
