There is a lot of overlap between accountants and bookkeepers, so it can be hard to know which one your business truly needs. Generally, bookkeepers work to record your financial data in logical and meaningful way, while accounts work to analyze that data.

Here are the top 5 questions you should ask a potential bookkeeper:

1. HOW DO YOU PRICE YOUR SERVICES? Bookkeepers may offer value or package pricing, charge hourly, or use a combination of both.

2. WHAT IS YOUR COMMUNICATION POLICY? Be sure to confirm their preferred method of contact- phone, text, or email? Do they have predetermined office hours or appointments for questions and, perhaps most importantly, how long is their typical response time?

3. DO YOU UNDERSTAND MY BUSINESS? While your bookkeeper doesn’t need to know how to DO your job, they need to understand WHAT you do and HOW you do it. Hiring a bookkeeper that is familiar with your industry will save you both time and energy.

4. WHAT IS INCLUDED IN YOUR SERVICES? Be sure that that the services they offer match the services you actually need!

5. DO WE CLICK? Choosing a bookkeeper is a big decision, and it is incredibly important to find one that is the right fit.

Yeah, I didn’t think so.

Taxes are often one of the biggest stressors small business owners face, and for good reason!

As a sole proprietor you’re responsible for paying:
✔️ Income taxes
✔️ CPP contributions (employee AND
employer portions)
✔️ EI contributions (optional)

A good rule of thumb is to set aside 25-30% of your income (minus expenses) each month for taxes. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did!
