When most people think about investing, they think about returns. I think there's another question worth asking: what protects the orchard when storms arrive?

We've owned gold for nearly two decades, and it hasn't always been a fun asset to own. For me, the conversation is about diversification and resilience, not chasing the latest hype.

Let's talk about where precious metals may fit in your broader wealth plan.

One of the conversations many families avoid is what happens when mom or dad can no longer live independently. Who coordinates care, and how do we protect dignity, independence and family harmony?

Financial planning is about more than investments. It's also about protecting the people who planted the orchard.

If your family is starting to think about elder care, reach out and let's start the conversation.

Economics in one lesson - Part 2

In 1946, Henry Hazlitt argued that nearly every economic mistake in history comes down to one thing: only seeing half the picture.

He called it the Seen versus the Unseen.

Most people, and most politicians, focus on the immediate effect of a policy on one visible group. The Seen. But the real consequences show up later, spread across everyone else. The Unseen.

Bad economists stop at the first effect. Good economists trace what happens next, and to whom.

Here is the lesson in one sentence. The art of economics is looking not merely at the immediate effects of any policy, but the longer effects, and not merely for one group, but for all groups.

Miss that, and you will be fooled by almost every political promise you ever hear.

All the money you have is all the money you have. It does not matter how many accounts you split it into or how many labels you put on it. At the end of the day, it is one pool of capital.

We have been taught to carve wealth into pieces. The vacation account. The renovation account. The education account. The car account.

But is that actually helping you build more wealth? Or is it just adding complexity, reducing your control, and creating unnecessary headaches? Every time we wall money off into tiny boxes, we lose the ability to let that capital work together as a single, powerful system.

Imagine one primary place to store your wealth instead. We call it your family banking system. Think of it like an apple tree that stays healthy and keeps growing. When you need money for a vacation or a new car, you do not chop down the tree for the wood. You leverage its strength. You borrow against your capital while the tree keeps growing, protected from taxes and market volatility.

This is about less complexity and more control. Stewardship over your entire orchard, not just a few stray apples.

How much life insurance should I apply for?

I get this question all the time. And most people expect me to hit them with a formula.

But I think we are asking the question the wrong way.

Life insurance is not just something people need. For most of the families I work with, it is something they want, for the people they love most.

They want their loved ones to have opportunities.

To be safe. To thrive. To have choices.

In this video, I walk through how I help clients think about coverage, and why the real question is not, “How much do I need?” but rather, “What do I want to protect, no matter what?”

It is not about fear. It is about love.

Give it a watch. And if it gets you thinking differently about your own family’s plan, let’s talk.

If what you thought to be true about life insurance turned out not to be true, when would you want to know?

Most people think charitable giving is just writing a cheque. But what if one annual donation could become a lasting gift of capital, and hand you a significant tax benefit in the process?

There are two strategies every business owner and family should know. CHOLI and DOLI.

CHOLI, charity-owned life insurance, is the “now” approach. The charity owns the policy, you fund the premiums, and because they hold the keys, your contributions may qualify for a charitable tax receipt every single year. A significant future gift, with a tax win today.

DOLI, donor-owned life insurance, is the “control” approach. You keep the keys. You own the policy and name the charity as beneficiary. You maintain access and control during your lifetime, the tax benefit flows through your estate, and the impact is just as powerful.

One transfers ownership today. The other lets you build the gift while keeping control. Both turn a recurring donation into a legacy of capital.

What if the greatest gift you could give a charity was not a cheque, but the ability to create their own cheques, year after year?

When most people think about charitable giving, they think about writing a cheque. You donate, the charity spends it, the impact is made once. And there is nothing wrong with that.

But there is another way to think about giving.

Instead of handing someone a basket of apples, imagine giving them the tree itself. Rather than transferring money that gets spent once, you can structure a gift that creates an asset which keeps producing value long into the future. For the charity, greater stability and a stronger foundation. For the donor, a deeper and more lasting impact.

Sometimes the greatest gift is not the fruit. It is the tree that keeps producing it. If what you thought to be true about charitable giving turned out not to be true, when would you want to know?

There is a silent assassin in your financial orchard. It has already taken more than 60% of your purchasing power. And most people never see it happen.

Here is the uncomfortable math.

$100 in 2005 needs to be $153 today just to buy the same groceries. If you have been sitting in cash waiting for the “right time,” you are not standing still. You are quietly losing the ability to fund your future.

Cash feels safe. It feels like shelter from the storm. But safety and erosion can look identical until it is too late to matter.

Wealth Creators do not chase gains. They protect the tree so it can bear fruit for generations, and they refuse to let the leaks go unplugged.

If I asked how much you would like to contribute to your TFSA this year, most people say: as much as possible. And for how many years? For as long as they will let me.

So let me ask the same question about your corporation.

Those retained earnings sitting in your holding company. How much of that Holdco money would you like to move into a tax-exempt environment each year? And for how long would you like it to grow, protected from the heavy hand of the taxman?

We often get caught up in the “how” before we understand the “why.” In our world, we do not just look for a place to park cash. We look to build an orchard. The premium you add is not a cost. It is the seed for a tree that produces fruit for generations.

Whether it is personal cash flow or corporate wealth, the goal is the same. Regain control of the finance function and stop the unnecessary leaks. We can design the tools, but the strategy has to come first.
