⚠️ A W A R E N E S S P O S T ⚠️
Though this isn’t a new trend in auto thefts, many still aren’t aware it’s happening. Here’s what you need to know:
Re-vinning is the process of stealing a vehicle and then replacing the VIN number with what at first glance appears to be legitimate. The “new” VIN may belong to another vehicle, or be completely made up.
Why is this happening?
Usually, cars are stolen with the intention of being shipped overseas. However, this trend means stolen vehicles remain in Canada, are re-vinned, and then sold to the public. Victims of re-vinning have no idea they’ve purchased a stolen vehicle and are left to pay the ultimate price. Once it’s discovered that the vehicle is stolen, it is seized by law enforcement and the victim won’t recover any of the cost.
How can you protect yourself from becoming a victim?
Do your homework before purchasing any vehicle. This includes:
🚘 Know who you’re buying from. Even if purchasing through a dealership, consult the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council to ensure the dealership and salesperson are licensed.
🚘 Order a CarFax report to review the car history. If details and history seem inconsistent, 🚩
🚘 Have the seller provide a Used Vehicle Information Package from the Ministry of Transportation, which contains essential information on the vehicle.
🚘 Have a trusted mechanic conduct a thorough inspection of the vehicle to confirm it’s authenticity.
🚘 Ask loads of questions.
Being aware of what’s out there helps you be more vigilant, and make better decisions. 👊🏼
