Protecting Canada's caribou – one kilometre at a time
Protecting one of Canada’s most recognizable symbols – the threatened woodland caribou – comes with a heavy dose of coordination, a lot of education, and thousands upon thousands of kilometres. 53,000 to be exact.

Almost 10 years ago, the Aseniwuche Winewak Nation (AWN) of Canada in Alberta started the Caribou Patrol – an Indigenous-led stewardship program that promotes caribou conservation within AWN’s traditional territory. And a big part of the program is conducting road patrols on Alberta’s Highway 40 where the animals cross twice a year during their annual migration from their mountainous summer range in Jasper National Park and Wilmore Wilderness Park to their winter range in the forested foothills.

It’s important work given that in the region of Grande Cache, Alberta, there are only about 350 caribou left, according to the Government of Alberta.

“We travel highway 40 between Big Berland River and Muskeg River year round to educate and bring awareness to people travelling this stretch of road as well as humanely divert any caribou away from the road and vehicles,” explains Stephanie Leonard, environmental coordinator for the Aseniwuche Winewak Nation and a member of Caribou Patrol. “We end up putting about 53,000 kilometres on our vehicle every year – and that number is growing every year.”

Enter Imperial and our recent $25,000 donation for a new truck for the Caribou Patrol Program. Imperial has supported Caribou Patrol since 2017, donating close to $175,000 over that time in support of education and outreach initiatives.

“The Imperial donation has enabled us to keep our program operating efficiently by helping us to purchase a reliable vehicle,” Stephanie says.

Imperial has a special connection with Canadian Group of Seven artist AJ Casson – a connection that spans decades and touchpoints.

Most recently, Imperial gave Casson’s Twilight Near Britt to the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa in 2015, to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. The 1960 painting was one of five donated to the gallery, and part of our largest-ever art donation program, which saw 43 paintings in total donated to 15 art galleries across the country.

Artsfile, an online publication based in Ottawa, called the painting “a quintessential example of the Group of Seven style recognized by so many Canadians, and increasingly elsewhere.”

But even as Casson was part of that well-known collective of landscape artists, he also had another life – as a commercial artist. And that’s his other connection to Imperial.

In 1934, Casson was contracted by Imperial’s advertising agency, MacLaren Advertising, to paint a series of magazine advertisements. The three ads show different aspects of Imperial’s operations of the day: customer service, products and business opportunity.

“A lot of people worked as commercial artists,” says Lynette Walton, Imperial archivist at the Glenbow Museum. “There weren’t very many colour photos around at that time, and many ads used the work of artists. In fact, Casson worked as a commercial artist throughout his whole career. There wasn’t much money in art, even if you were in the Group of Seven.”

The ad artwork is quite different from Casson’s fine art style, but Walton says he captured Imperial so well.

Gateway to the Rocky Mountains now includes an Esso
It was a beautiful day on May 23 in Kananaskis country, as chiefs, councilors, community members and business partners gathered to celebrate the opening of the Bearspaw Kananaskis Travel Centre.

The 6,000 square-foot facility, adjacent to the Stoney Nakoda Resort & Casino, was opened by Stoney Nakoda Nation, which includes the Bearspaw First Nation, Chiniki First Nation and Wesley First Nation. The travel centre includes 10 Esso fuelling stations, truck transport fuelling stations and a Tim Hortons drive-through located in a stunning convenience store, not typical of the average service station.

As children ran and played throughout the ceremony, it was easy to envision the common theme of the dignitary speeches: youth. The travel centre will create opportunities for the youth of today, and also for those to come, and has created approximately 60 new jobs, 95 percent of which are filled by community members.

“We hope this is the beginning of a long and prosperous relationship for those involved,” said Darcy Dixon, Chief of the Bearspaw First Nation. “In today’s ever-changing world, nations are looking to be more involved in all business, all industries, surrounding our traditional lands.”

The Bearspaw Kananaskis Travel Centre is located about 75 kilometres west of Calgary, just off the Trans-Canada Highway. The highway, passing the new centre, is travelled by millions each year to reach Alberta’s Rocky Mountains and beyond.

Non-Fungible-Tokens are tokenized versions of unique assets like works of art, pieces of music, trading cards, real-estate and more, that can be traded on a blockchain, the digital ledger technology behind cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. NFTs are unique cryptographic tokens designed to offer unique, indestructible proof of ownership.

The recent surge in the popularity of Non-Fungible-Tokens has led to the explosion of the NFT market. A recent study revealed that NFT transactions skyrocketed from $40.96 million in 2018 to $338.04 million in 2020. That is an increase of over 8x in two years. In 2020, the NFT market was valued at $100 million. At the end of 2021, this increased by 220x to $22 billion. Today, the NFT market is valued at more than $35 billion and is expected to exceed $80 billion by 2025.

The excitement around Non-Fungible-Tokens started with blockchain-based NFTs like Beeple artworks that sold for millions, CryptoKitties, CryptoPunks and Axie Infinity – a P2E Vietnamese video game. It took the staggering $69.3 million sale of Everydays: The First 5000 Days by Beeple in the Q1 of 2021, for NFTs to gain global recognition and popularity. In Q4, 2021, the Larvalabs creation, CryptoPunk NFTs became really popular as they emerged as one of the largest NFT sales -- Cryptopunk #9998 sold for a staggering $532 million. These NFTs have sparked the interest of everyone in the crypto world, thus fueling an increasing demand for them. Consequently, it has led to the rapid explosion of NFTs across the worlds of music, games, arts, sports and so on.

Non-Fungible-Tokens are already disrupting various industries including gaming, art and music, sports and so on. In fact, several groundbreaking NFT projects have emerged to offer unconventional approaches to the artistic world. Some of these approaches include merging the real world and the metaverse, resolving issues with land ownership, creation of new markets and forms of investments like real estate trading, and so on.

New and unique NFT projects, such as Naughty MOAI, demonstrate in a cheeky and naughty way the application of NFTs in merging the real world and the metaverse. Naughty MOAI – the Moai-themed NFT collection generated by powerful creative algorithms, is a set of 6,000 generative NFT figures inspired by the MOAI legend of Easter Island. They are termed “Naughty” to depict their unconventional blends of style, beauty, and personality which are unapologetically authentic and refreshing. Each NFT in the collection comes with beautiful expressions, clothing, cultural elements, emotions, and shapes. These NFTs make visual references to additional key cultural references like singers and thinkers, that have impacted the cultural sectors for centuries.

LUNA witnessed a 100% jump over the weekend.
The coin starts the week with a 30+% gain in the last 24 hours.
Some of the reasons for LUNA pumping are LUNA burning, the hard fork proposal, and the difficulty shorting LUNA.
Over the weekend, the volatile Terra (LUNA) crypto witnessed a 100% pump. This follows the aftermath of its price dropping 100% early this month. The tragic drop saw its stablecoin TerraUSD (UST) de-peg from the dollar, wiping off billions of dollars of investors’ wealth. This also attracted a fair level of regulatory scrutiny around stablecoins.

At the time of writing, Terra (LUNA) is up around 30.69%, according to data from CoinMarketCap. Let’s look at some of the possible reasons why LUNA is pumping.

The first possible reason why LUNA is pumping may have something to do with project founder Do Kwon’s proposal to burn the Terra Luna token and cap the supply at 1 billion. This process involves sending LUNA to an off-chain “burn” wallet address that can only be used to receive crypto and no other purpo ..
