Mass in the Lourdes Grotto. Men and women mostly kneeling, some standing, in foreground. Crutches suspended on grotto wall. Patrick H. Kelly wrote in his 1920 The Story of the K. of C. Pilgrimage, “We then visited the Shrine, where in 1858 the Blessed Virgin appeared to the child, Bernadette Soubirous. … A statue of the Blessed Virgin is set in natural rock at the spot where she became visible to Bernadette.”

Two hundred and thirty-nine Knights of Columbus traveled to France and Italy in 1920 on their pilgrimage to Metz, which included stops through post-World War I France, Italy and Switzerland. A stop in France during their pilgrimage was Lourdes. Shown here: Knights in the procession of the Blessed Sacrament.

Throwback Thursday: 1919

During and after World War I the Knights of Columbus provided support and activities "huts" for servicemen at home and overseas with the the commitment 'Everybody Welcome, Everything Free'. In the Toul, France clubhouse, men waited on the stairs, some with towels over shoulders or in hands, for bathing access.
