As I sort through my mother's belongings, I've been finding photos I've never seen before. Many include my dad, whom I lost when I was just 15 years old.

Some moments have made me smile, some have brought tears, but all of them have reminded me how important it is to preserve our stories.

In my work, I often help families prepare financially for the future. What I've been reminded of lately is that the legacy we leave behind isn't just financial. It's also the photos, memories, values, and stories that connect generations.

I'm grateful to have these unexpected glimpses into my parents' lives, and even more grateful that I'll be able to share them with my children.

Two questions have come up again and again this week, so let’s talk about them openly.

“I already have an advisor… but I don’t understand my statement.”
This is more common than you think. Your statement shouldn’t feel like a foreign language. You deserve clear explanations, plain English, and someone who will sit with you until it clicks. Understanding your own money is empowering, and it’s part of my job to make sure you feel confident—not confused.

“If something happens to me, does my survivor just call you?”
Absolutely. When life takes a turn, your family shouldn’t be left sorting through policies and paperwork alone. They call me, and I walk them through everything step by step.
And yes—this includes your investments. Your survivor doesn’t have to guess what accounts you have, how they’re structured, or what needs to be done. I help them understand the investments you held, guide them through the transition process, and make sure everything is handled properly and in the right order. It’s a guided process, not something they have to figure out alone.

After losing my mom on June 30th, I shared a post about the things I wish I had done differently. Today, I want to talk about grief itself — something many of my clients navigate at one point or another.

Grief doesn’t just change how you feel; it changes how people show up around you. Some step forward with incredible support. Others can only offer what they’re able. Both are okay. Everyone has their own capacity, and grief teaches you to see that with compassion.

If you’re grieving, please know you’re not alone. There’s no timeline, no “right way,” and no perfect support system. There’s just doing your best, one day at a time, and accepting help in whatever form it comes.

Over the last week, I’ve had quite a few people reach out asking if I’m taking on new clients. The answer is yes — when it’s a good fit on both sides.

And here’s what you should look for in an advisor:

Transparency — no jargon, no pressure, no surprises.

Consistency — an advisor who actually checks in, not just once a year.

Things I Wish I'd Done Differently

Losing my mom has made me reflect on the things I wish I had done while she was still here. Maybe sharing them will encourage someone else to spend a little extra time with the seniors in their life.

If I could do it over again...

❤️ I would have hired a cleaning person sooner. As we age, keeping up with a home becomes more difficult, and sometimes accepting help isn't easy. Looking back, it would have eased so much stress for both of us.

❤️ I would have started helping her sort through and downsize her belongings earlier. It's overwhelming to do it all after someone is gone, and I know it would have been easier if we'd tackled it together over time.

❤️ I would have invited her over for more meals—or made sure she had meals delivered more often. Sharing a meal is about so much more than food.

❤️ Whenever I was running errands, I would have called to ask, "Do you want to come with me?" Even a trip to the grocery store or pharmacy would have meant getting out of the apartment and spending time together.

❤️ I would have said "yes" more often when she wanted to do something, whether it was going to a Blue Jays game or just getting out for the afternoon. There always seemed to be another day. Sometimes there isn't.

And lastly...

The things that irritated me are the things I miss the most.

My mom would call me several times throughout the day to tell me little things that had happened. She did it because she was worried she'd forget if she waited until later. I'll admit there were times I was busy and found it frustrating.

Today, I'd give anything for one more one of those phone calls.

If your parent, grandparent, or another senior in your life calls just to chat, maybe answer if you can. One day, those ordinary moments may be the ones you miss the most.
