Leasing vs. Buying Equipment: A Better Option

The process for applying for equipment leasing is fairly straightforward, and you probably won't need to provide all of the financial documentation that you would have if you were applying for a traditional small business loan. There is also the possibility of obtaining financing for equipment that uses real equipment as a loan guarantee, providing very low-interest rates, smooth payments, and facilitating cyclical upgrades.

If your business needs new equipment on a regular basis, leasing makes it easy to upgrade to the latest technology. Leasing can be a good option for companies that upgrade their equipment or technology frequently because renting allows you to keep cash in reserve and pay less for always having new and updated equipment. You can get a lot more for your money with leasing than just buying an asset, including the ability to upgrade your technology, scheduled maintenance and repairs in the event of breakdowns, and even the ability to buy an asset at a significantly reduced price or sell an asset for a profit. If you don't have the money to buy equipment directly, leasing is a more affordable option, especially for expensive equipment.

Many small business owners simply don't have the money to buy new equipment right away or don't want to create cash flow problems, so business equipment leasing can come in handy. Leasing gives you the opportunity to get the equipment you need without ruining your budget. At the end of the lease, you can either return the equipment or get something more, and purchase the equipment of your choice. You may decide to lease or purchase equipment such as machinery and technology (such as computers) depending on the financial position of your company.

As with leasing, buying equipment for your business also comes with a few downsides, and you may find that these downsides are enough to make you prefer leasing rather than paying full price. But if you are a fast-growing business or you work in the high technology industry with high equipment turnover, equipment leasing can be a good solution for your business needs. If you find yourself in constant need of hardware upgrades, leasing may be a better option than buying.

However, leasing gives the customer the flexibility to upgrade their equipment during the lease term. Most contractors take advantage of the expiration of a purchase option during a lease because it rarely makes sense to return equipment. If they need an upgrade, they often buy their equipment using the buy option and then trade in their existing equipment from the dealer for new or different equipment.

When choosing between leasing and financing, it's helpful to calculate the total cost of both options and then compare that to the value the equipment can add in terms of growing your business or increasing revenue. Since no two companies are the same, it is necessary to consider the advantages and disadvantages of leasing before buying and choose the most suitable purchase option.
