Insurance is complicated - how do you know what you are paying for?
As brokers, we are here to advise and support you throughout the process. With that, here are a few tips about buying insurance:
1) Do your research. If a company is offering drastically lower premium - there is a reason. Typically, its significantly reducing coverage or poor underwriting. A broker can help walk you through coverages and any underwriting concerns an insurer may have.
2) Beware online policies. There is a reason most forms of insurance cannot be done online. There are too many variables. Items that WILL effect your insurance - solid fuel heating, claims history, distance to a firehall, age of the home, type of construction, rebuilding cost, to name a few. A broker is trained and licensed to collect this info and put together a package to protect the most important things to you.
3) Make sure your insurer knows about any major renovations such as reshingling the roof or replacing the furnace. If you are not sure if it will help your policy - ask your broker. That is what we are here for.
