The Bank of Canada has increased its borrowing cost by 0.25%, a move that was widely anticipated by economists and markets. The central bank made this announcement along with new economic projections. The increase brings the bank's key rate to 5%.

Last month, the Bank of Canada raised interest rates after a previous pause on rate hikes. This decision was influenced by concerns over strong economic data, which indicated that interest rates were insufficient to cool the economy and control inflation.

Given the tight labor market and ongoing inflation pressures, economists had predicted this rate hike. Although Canada's annual inflation rate fell to 3.4% in May, other indicators suggest that prices are still rising rapidly.
