Not every opportunity to grow is a good opportunity.

Business owners are constantly being told they need to grow. More sales, more employees, more locations, more equipment.

But I’ve seen situations over the years where saying no to growth would have been the better business decision.

A large new contract can look great until you work through the margins, additional employees, equipment, inventory and working capital needed to service it. A new location can increase revenue while adding enough overhead and management responsibility to make the overall business less profitable.

Sometimes the opportunity is a good one, but the business simply isn’t ready for it.

Before taking on significant growth, I think owners need to ask a few basic questions. Is the new business actually profitable? How much capital will it require? Do we have the people and systems to handle it properly? And what happens to the existing business while we’re focused on the expansion?

After more than 30 years in business and commercial finance, I’ve learned that bigger and better are not always the same thing.

Sometimes the best business decision is knowing when to say no.

One of the biggest financing mistakes I see business owners make is waiting until they need the money before they start looking for it.

The best time to arrange financing is often when the business is performing well, cash flow is stable, and there is no immediate pressure to get a deal done.

Whether it’s replacing equipment, adding capacity, funding growth or strengthening working capital, planning ahead gives you more options and usually puts you in a much stronger negotiating position.

Financing should be part of your business strategy, not just a solution when cash gets tight.
