The word « ringer » comes from the English ring: the colored bands form rings around the necklines and sleeves, a finish that is both graphic and functional.
The ringer t-shirt appeared in the 1950s and 1960s in the sportswear of American colleges and summer camps. The contrasting bands were used both to reinforce the areas of collar and wrist wear and to display the colors of a team or institution. In this context, the ringer was above all a functional garment: resistant, identifiable with a glance, easy to manufacture in series.
