GTA home prices are down more than 24% from their 2022 peak, but history suggests the correction could take years to fully play out.

Canada is entering a major mortgage-renewal cycle, and research by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), using Equifax data, shows mortgage arrears (loans 90+ days overdue) are rising modestly from post-pandemic lows and are expected to keep increasing into 2026, especially in Toronto and, more gradually, Vancouver, although still below past downturn levels. Over 1.5 million households have already renewed at higher rates and another ~1 million will soon, with pandemic-era buyers most vulnerable as payment shocks squeeze budgets and savings, even while many borrowers extend amortizations to cope and overall delinquency remains historically subdued

Turning 40 this year? (Or already there?) 🎂

Here’s a question I get a lot: « Am I on track? »

The common benchmark: 3x your income saved by 40 (Fidelity Canada).

The reality? Most Canadians at 40 have around $71,000 saved.

If that gap feels overwhelming, here’s what I remind clients:

1️⃣ Your 40s are typically your peak earning years. Use raises strategically.

2️⃣ If you start seriously at 40, saving 18% of income can still get you there.

3️⃣ Waiting until 50 means needing 42% of income. That’s the real cost of delay.

Benchmarks are guides, not judgments. Everyone’s journey looks different. What matters is starting where you are and building momentum.

What’s one savings habit that’s worked for you?

YOUR INSURANCE REVIEW: FIVE QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF (AND YOUR ADVISOR)

Life insurance was a good idea when you bought it. Now, five, 10, 15, or more years after you made that first decision, your insurance review is an opportunity to take fresh stock of the people, places, and things that matter most. Life evolves. And so should your insurance plan.

1. Do I have enough insurance to pay my current debts and ensure any commitments I’ve made (such as education plans for children or grandchildren) are secure?

2. Should I renew my term life insurance or are the benefits of a permanent life policy while I’m alive a better fit for my current financial profile? Does it make sense to own both?

3. What commitments have I made to my partners and my staff if I die before my planned retirement? What if I become sick, injured, or disabled?

4. Does my estate plan cover higher capital gains tax rates ? Can life insurance also be a cost-effective solution for preserving more of my assets (and the cottage) for my heirs?

5. Do I need critical illness or disability insurance? What are the financial implications for my dependents if I can’t work for a year or more?
