I have been helping people deal with unmanageable debt for over 25 years. During that time I have met many honest hard-working talented people who have found themselves in financial distress through no fault of their own. Plant closures, injury, sickness, marriage breakups and fraud all occur. Back in Charles Dickens time, these people might well have found themselves in debtors’ prison, there to

remain until their debts were paid. Fortunately in our day we have the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, a Federal Statue, which deals with these situations in a more enlightened manner, offering protection to those who find themselves unable to meet the demands of their creditors. Two solutions to unmanageable debt offered by the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act are bankruptcy or consumer proposals. One solution is not better or worse than the other. Rather one or the other will be a better solution depending on the individual’s unique circumstances. If you have unmanageable debt, you should give us a call. When I first started business I used to have a yellow page ad that said “It doesn’t cost anything to talk”. By this I tried to let people know that, without obligation, they could come in, discuss their situation confidentially with me, have all their questions answered and decide on the best course of action to solve the problem. Make an appointment and come and see me. The consultation is free and remember, “knowledge is power.”

An Ontario woman says she is furious that her bank repeatedly increased the limit on a joint line of credit she had with her then-husband, allowing him to rack up debt for which she is responsible. She wants banks to have to get permission before increasing a customer's line of credit.

There is some great advice here. Do not let debt collectors pressure you to pay something you are not responsible for:

Blogger John Schmoll's father left a financial mess when he died: a house that was worth far less than the mortgage, credit card bills in excess of $20,000_and debt collector s who insisted the son was legally obligated to pay what his father owed. Fortunately, Schmoll knew better. "I'
