Today was one of those rare and special days that stays with you for a long time. I had the incredible honor of meeting Mr. Bruce Etherington,an icon in the insurance industry. At 82 years young, he told me, “This is the most active and productive time of my life.” What was supposed to be a brief 10–15 minute meeting turned into two hours of priceless wisdom. If it weren’t for his lunch appointment, I’m certain we could’ve gone on even longer,there was just so much to absorb.
Thank you so much, Bruce. I’m genuinely speechless when I meet people like you,so full of knowledge, humility, and a true desire to give back. You remind us that when someone becomes truly wise, they’re not afraid to share. In fact, they want to share.
Here are just a few of the nuggets I took away from our conversation:
"See the people." This is a people business, and we must never forget that.
He expressed concern that our industry lacks enough professionals with the right knowledge to truly help more families. That’s a call to action for all of us.
He reframed our mistakes as experiences. What a powerful shift in mindset.
And he told the story of the importance of asking. His father once said, “Ask for the daytime appointment.” Because if we don’t ask, we don’t get.
Mr. Etherington is a man of faith, a true believer in biblical wisdom, and someone who lives the principle: “You reap what you sow.” In this business since 1955, his passion and commitment still burn as brightly as ever.
What a privilege to learn from someone who proves that age is just a number,and that wisdom grows even more valuable when it’s shared.
